The two-monsoon rule
Sri Lanka has two monsoons running on opposite schedules. The Yala monsoon (May–September) brings rain to the south-west and hill country. The Maha monsoon (November–February) brings rain to the north and east. Something is always in season — knowing which coast to be on is half the planning.
December – March: the headline season
The classic luxury window. South and west coasts dry and warm (28–31°C), Yala safari at peak game-viewing, blue whales off Mirissa, dry cultural triangle, cool clear evenings in Ella and Nuwara Eliya. Hotels at their busiest — book early. February is the connoisseur's pick.
April: the shoulder
Sinhala & Tamil New Year mid-month. South coast still excellent in the first two weeks; tea country warm and green. Easter falls here — direct LHR flights, beach plus safari plus tea in ten nights is comfortable.
May – September: pivot east
The west and south get wetter, but the east coast (Pasikuda, Trincomalee, Arugam Bay) is dry, warm and quiet — and Yala remains workable. Cultural triangle still in good shape. Summer holiday families fit naturally here.
October half-term
A genuine sweet spot: both coasts viable, low-season prices, lush green tea country after the rains, and direct UK flights still light on price. We send a lot of British families and couples in October.
November – December: the turn
Inter-monsoonal — afternoon showers possible anywhere, but stretches of clear weather dominate. South coast opens up fully by mid-December, just in time for the festive surge.

Common questions
What is the best month overall to visit Sri Lanka?+
January to March is the safest single-month answer — guaranteed sun on the south and west coasts, dry cultural triangle, cool tea country, and perfect Yala safari conditions. February is the gold standard.
When should UK families travel?+
February half-term, Easter and October half-term all fall in workable windows. February and Easter favour the south; October suits both coasts. Christmas and New Year are peak season — book six to nine months ahead.
Which months should I avoid?+
No month is a write-off — Sri Lanka has two monsoons, so something is always in season. May–September is wetter in the south-west but perfect for the east coast (Trincomalee, Pasikuda) and still good for the cultural triangle.
When is honeymoon season?+
December to mid-April is the classic honeymoon window — calm seas on the south coast, whale-watching off Mirissa, and dry safari conditions in Yala. Shoulder months (late April, October) offer better value and fewer crowds.
