What tailor made actually means

A tailor made holiday starts with a conversation, not a catalogue. You tell us when you can travel, roughly what you want to spend and what kind of days you enjoy. We come back with a route: which regions, how many nights in each, which specific hotels and rooms, and what it costs in pounds.

Nothing is shared. Your own vehicle, your own chauffeur-guide, your own dates. If you want to spend four nights in tea country and skip the cultural triangle entirely, that is a normal request rather than a special exception.

How the process works

1. The brief. Fifteen minutes on the phone or a form — dates, party, budget range, what you loved and hated about your last big trip.

2. The outline. Within 24 hours you receive a route with named hotels, a night-by-night shape and indicative per-person pricing. No deposit, no obligation.

3. Refinement. Two or three rounds. Swap hotels, add nights, trim the budget, move the safari earlier. We hold rooms while you decide.

4. Confirmation. Deposit, ATOL certificate, full documentation. Flights either booked through us or left with you.

5. In country. A 24/7 WhatsApp concierge and a driver who can re-route on the day.

Tailor made vs package: the honest comparison

Dates: package = fixed departures; tailor made = you choose.

Group: package = coach of 20–40; tailor made = just your party.

Hotels: package = whatever the wholesaler contracted; tailor made = the specific hotel and room we would stay in ourselves.

Pace: package = fixed; tailor made = changeable mid-trip.

Price: not the gulf people expect. For Sri Lanka, tailor made through a ground operator typically undercuts the equivalent UK high-street package by 15–25%.

What a tailor made itinerary includes

Private chauffeur-guide throughout · air-conditioned vehicle sized to your party · all inter-region transfers · every hotel booked personally by room category · daily breakfast · park fees and jeep hire on safari days · 24/7 in-country concierge · ATOL and TOPP protection.

Optional layers: helicopter or seaplane hops between regions, private historian-led touring at Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa, a private carriage on the Kandy–Ella train, chef-staffed villa takeovers, and a Maldives extension.

Indicative 2026 pricing, per person, land-only

7 nights luxury: £2,400–£4,200 · 10 nights luxury: £3,400–£6,000 · 14 nights luxury: £4,800–£8,500.

10 nights ultra-luxury (Aman, Tea Trails, Cape Weligama): £7,000–£12,000. Add £700–£1,100 per person for return economy flights from London, or £2,400–£4,200 in business.

Who this suits

Couples who want the trip to fit their calendar rather than the other way round. Honeymooners. Families needing school-holiday dates and interconnecting rooms. Repeat travellers who already know they dislike group touring. Anyone booking six figures of hotel nights across a lifetime who would rather deal with one planner than a call centre.

Common questions

What is a tailor made holiday?+

A holiday designed from a blank page around your dates, pace, budget and interests — rather than picked from a brochure. Every hotel, transfer, guide and experience is chosen for you specifically, and nothing is shared with strangers. It is the opposite of a packaged departure with fixed dates and a fixed route.

Are tailor made holidays worth the higher price?+

They usually are not the higher price. Because we are the ground operator rather than a reseller, a tailor made Serendib & Co journey typically lands 15–25% below the equivalent UK high-street package for the same hotels. What you pay extra for is judgement — which hotel, which room, which month — and that is where the value sits.

How is a tailor made holiday different from a package?+

A package fixes the dates, the route and the group. Tailor made fixes nothing until you say so. You choose when to fly, how long in each region, whether you want a 6am safari or a lie-in, and which hotels you actually like the look of. Changes mid-trip are handled by your in-country concierge rather than a call centre.

What does a tailor made Sri Lanka holiday cost from the UK?+

£3,400–£6,000 per person for 10 luxury nights, land-only, based on two sharing. Ultra-luxury with Aman and Tea Trails runs £7,000–£12,000 per person. Return flights from London add £700–£1,100 in economy or £2,400–£4,200 in business.

What should I ask before booking a tailor made holiday?+

Four things: is the operator ATOL protected, are they the ground operator or a reseller, who is on the other end of the phone at 2am local time, and can they name the specific room category they are booking you into? Vague answers to the last one usually mean a wholesale allocation rather than a chosen room.

How long does it take to plan?+

A first outline route with indicative pricing reaches you within 24 hours. Two or three rounds of refinement usually settle it inside a week. Peak-season hotels (December–February) should be secured 6–8 months ahead; shoulder season 3–4 months is comfortable.

Can I tailor an existing itinerary rather than start from scratch?+

Yes, and most clients do. Our signature itineraries are starting shapes, not fixed products — add three nights on the coast, swap a hotel, drop the cultural triangle, extend into the Maldives. The price adjusts accordingly.

Is a tailor made holiday financially protected?+

Ours are. Every Serendib & Co journey is ATOL protected and TOPP insured, so your deposit and your trip are safeguarded from the moment you confirm. Always check this — several British operators have failed in recent years.
