Why Yala, and why now
Block 1 of Yala National Park holds roughly one leopard per square kilometre — the highest density anywhere. Add elephant, sloth bear, sambar and over 200 bird species, and Yala remains the single best wildlife day in Sri Lanka.
Where we stay
Wild Coast Tented Lodge — cocoon-style tents on the edge of the park, naturalist-led drives, the finest food in the bush. Chena Huts by Uga — twenty private cabins with plunge pools and Indian Ocean views. Both are park-edge — drives start at dawn without a transfer.
Private vs shared jeeps
We only book private 4x4 jeeps with a naturalist. Block 1 can get busy on shared safaris; our guides know the quieter loops and the secondary gates that get you in ahead of the crowd.
How Yala fits the route
Pair two nights at Wild Coast with four nights on the south coast (Cape Weligama, Anantara Peace Haven) — under two hours by chauffeur. Add Wilpattu earlier in the trip for the contrast: wilder, quieter, fewer guests.

Common questions
When is the best time for Yala safari?+
February to early July is peak — water sources concentrate game, leopard sightings are at their highest, and the park is open. Block 1 closes for maintenance in September; we route around it.
Is Yala the best place to see leopards in Sri Lanka?+
Yala Block 1 has the highest leopard density in the world per square kilometre. Wilpattu is wilder and quieter but with fewer sightings. Most luxury itineraries pair both.
Where should I stay for a Yala safari?+
Wild Coast Tented Lodge (Resplendent Ceylon) and Chena Huts (Uga) are the two flagships — both with park-edge access and private naturalists. Cinnamon Wild is the comfortable mid-tier.
How many days do I need in Yala?+
Two nights minimum for a sunrise and sunset drive; three nights if leopard tracking is the priority. We pair Yala with a south coast beach stay to balance the early starts.
When is the best time for a Yala safari?+
February to early September. Peak conditions are February–March (dry, sparse foliage, highest leopard sightings). The park closes Block 1 for maintenance for around six weeks from September; Block 5 stays open.
Which luxury camp should we choose at Yala?+
Wild Coast Tented Lodge for the cocoon-shaped tented suites on the beach, Chena Huts for the cabanas and the Yala beach access, Leopard Trails for the all-inclusive guided model. All three include private vehicles.
Can you guarantee a leopard sighting?+
No reputable operator guarantees sightings, but Yala has the world's highest leopard density. Two full safari days (dawn + dusk) almost always deliver. Block 5 is quieter and arguably better for the patient.
