What you'll see
Sri Lanka has eight UNESCO World Heritage sites — six of them cultural. A cultural tour anchors on the Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura, Dambulla), adds Kandy (Temple of the Tooth) and the colonial Galle Fort. 2,500 years of architecture, in 10 nights.
The classic 10-night cultural route
Nights 1–3: Cultural Triangle — Water Garden Sigiriya, dawn climbs at Sigiriya and Pidurangala, Dambulla cave temples, Polonnaruwa by private car.
Nights 4–5: Kandy — Kandy House, the Temple of the Tooth at evening puja, a tea estate at Geragama, the botanic gardens at Peradeniya.
Nights 6–7: Tea country (optional bridge) — Ceylon Tea Trails or a hill estate stay.
Nights 8–10: Galle Fort — Amangalla inside the ramparts, a private antiques walk, evening cocktails on the bastions.
Historian guides
We work with three Colombo-based historians who join half- or full-days at Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa or Kandy. They turn a guidebook climb into a 5th-century hydraulic engineering lesson, a Buddhist iconography masterclass, or a colonial-trade walk through Galle Fort. £350–£550 per day plus travel.
What's included
Private chauffeur-guide for the duration · all UNESCO site entry fees · early-access arrangements at Sigiriya · optional historian add-ons · luxury hotels throughout · daily breakfast · 24/7 in-country concierge.

Common questions
What does a Sri Lanka cultural tour include?+
The Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya rock, Polonnaruwa ruins, Anuradhapura's sacred Bo tree, Dambulla cave temples), Kandy (Temple of the Tooth, Esala Perahera in July–August), and Galle Fort. All UNESCO-listed apart from Galle Fort's working old town.
Best length for a cultural tour?+
10 nights is the sweet spot — 5 in the cultural triangle and Kandy, 5 on the south coast / Galle Fort. 14 nights lets you add tea country or a safari.
What does a cultural tour cost from the UK?+
£4,400–£6,500 per person for 10 nights at a luxury level, land-only — Water Garden Sigiriya, Kandy House, Amangalla. Add £800–£1,200 per person for private historian guides at each major site.
Are historian guides included?+
Optional but recommended at premium tier. We work with three Colombo-based historians who join you for a half or full day at Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa or Kandy — the difference between 'climbing a rock' and understanding 5th-century hydraulics.
Best time for cultural sites?+
December–March for dry weather across the cultural triangle. Sigiriya is best climbed at 5.30am (gate opens 6am) to beat the heat. July–August adds the Esala Perahera festival in Kandy — extraordinary, book a year ahead.
Sigiriya or Pidurangala?+
Climb Sigiriya itself (the rock) for the frescoes and the upper palace; the views are inside the site. Climb Pidurangala (the smaller rock opposite) for the photograph of Sigiriya. We routinely do both — Pidurangala at sunrise, Sigiriya at 9am after the crowds clear.
Is the cultural triangle suitable for older travellers?+
Yes, with planning. Sigiriya has 1,200 steps and limited shade — we arrange a private wheelchair-assisted ascent route to the Lion Paws for those who can't climb the upper steps. Polonnaruwa is largely flat and explored from an air-conditioned car between stops.
Can a cultural tour include the south coast?+
Yes — almost every cultural tour we design ends with 3–4 nights at Amangalla in Galle Fort. Adds depth without breaking the cultural arc.
