August weather
The east stays dry and hot; the south-west continues showery with occasional bright, beautiful days. Humidity is high in the lowlands, and the hills are cool and blowy. Sea conditions on the east coast are excellent.
Surf and beaches
Arugam Bay peaks in August — Main Point, Whiskey Point and Peanut Farm all working, with private surf guiding available. For calmer swimming, Pasikuda and Nilaveli are the family choices.
Family logistics
School-holiday demand is high but Sri Lanka absorbs it well. We favour two bases plus one wildlife camp, keep road legs under three hours, and build in a rest day after the overnight flight.

Common questions
Is August a good time to visit Sri Lanka?+
Yes — for the east coast, the Cultural Triangle and wildlife. Avoid planning a south-coast beach finish this month.
Is Sri Lanka good in the UK summer holidays?+
It is one of the better long-haul options: direct flights, no jet-lag-destroying time difference for most itineraries, and a genuinely dry beach coast in the east.
Is Arugam Bay worth it in August?+
If anyone in the party surfs, yes — it is one of Asia's best right-hand point breaks and August is peak season.
How much does August cost?+
Ten nights of luxury from roughly £4,000 per person land-only — cheaper than January, though east-coast hotel stock at the very top end is thinner.
