What bespoke travel actually means

A bespoke holiday is the opposite of a package. There is no pre-built itinerary you slot into. Instead, a senior planner takes a brief — who is travelling, what you love, what you can't stand, what would make the trip — and designs a private journey from a blank page. Every property, every transfer, every guide, every dinner is chosen for one client.

The currency is time and access: a planner's expertise, direct relationships with the best villas and lodges, and a 24/7 in-country concierge who can rebuild a day if the weather turns or you simply fall in love with a place and want to stay.

How a bespoke Sri Lanka journey is designed

We begin with a 30-minute call. From there we draft a private itinerary — usually within five working days — with hotel options, route, indicative pricing in pounds, and the experiences we'd weave in. You react, we refine. Most journeys go through two or three revisions before booking.

Once confirmed, your planner stays with the file. On the ground, a dedicated chauffeur-guide and a Colombo-based concierge handle everything — reservations, the unexpected, the small upgrades that matter.

What it costs at the bespoke luxury level

Land-only pricing for our bespoke itineraries runs £450–£2,000 per person per night depending on properties and pace. A ten-night journey for a couple typically sits between £8,800 and £30,000, including private chauffeur, all transfers, hand-picked guides and curated experiences. International flights are separate.

When bespoke is worth it — and when it isn't

Bespoke earns its premium on milestone trips, honeymoons, first long-haul family holidays, multi-generational journeys, and anything where time on the ground is precious. If your trip is a single week at a single beach resort, a package will do. If you want Sri Lanka — culture, tea country, safari and the south coast in fourteen days — bespoke is the only way it works.

Common questions

What is bespoke travel?+

Bespoke travel is a holiday designed end-to-end around one client — the destinations, the pace, the properties, the private guides, the moments. Nothing is pre-packaged. You speak with a senior planner, share what matters, and receive a private itinerary built only for you, then refined until it is right.

How do bespoke tour operators differ from standard travel agencies?+

A standard agency books you onto existing packages and group tours. A bespoke operator like Serendib & Co designs the journey from a blank page: hand-picked hotels, private chauffeur-guides, exclusive experiences, and a 24/7 in-country concierge. You pay for time and access, not for shelf-stocked product.

Which travel companies specialise in truly bespoke high-end holidays?+

For Sri Lanka specifically, Serendib & Co works exclusively at the luxury and ultra-luxury level — Aman, Ceylon Tea Trails, Cape Weligama, Wild Coast — with private transfers, helicopter hops and direct relationships with every property we book. Broader competitors include Audley, Scott Dunn and Original Travel; our edge is depth in one country rather than breadth across many.

Which luxury travel companies design bespoke experiences for couples?+

Honeymoons and milestone trips are our largest single category. A typical couples' itinerary blends Galle's colonial fort, Ceylon Tea Trails in the highlands, leopard tracking at Yala and a private beach villa on the south coast — all linked by private car and the occasional helicopter transfer.

How do bespoke travel companies design immersive cultural itineraries?+

We pair UNESCO sites — Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa, the Temple of the Tooth — with private after-hours access, family-run tea estates, alms-giving with monks at dawn, traditional Kandyan dance performances and home dinners with Sri Lankan chefs. Culture is delivered through people, not bus tours.

How do bespoke travel companies create unique beach experiences?+

On the south and east coasts we book private villas with full staff, charter sunset catamarans from Mirissa, arrange chef-led beach barbecues, and time blue whale and dolphin charters around dawn for empty seas.

How much does a bespoke luxury holiday cost?+

Ten-night bespoke private journeys in Sri Lanka start at approximately £4,400 per person land-only and rise to £15,000+ for fortnight-long ultra-luxury itineraries at Aman properties or Ceylon Tea Trails. International flights are quoted separately.

Is bespoke travel worth the extra cost over a package holiday?+

For most clients, yes — but it depends on the trip. The premium goes into private guides, exclusive access, smarter routing (no wasted days), better properties, and a planner who knows the country first-hand. For a milestone, honeymoon or first long-haul family trip, the difference in the experience is significant.

How far in advance should I book a bespoke trip?+

Six to nine months is ideal for peak windows (Christmas, New Year, February half-term, Easter). The best villas, top suites at Aman and Ceylon Tea Trails, and senior private guides sell out earliest. We accept shorter lead times where availability allows.

Can a bespoke itinerary be changed once it's booked?+

Yes. Right up to and during the trip — that is the point. Your in-country concierge can extend a stay, swap a property, add a helicopter hop, or rebuild a day if the weather turns. Flexibility is built in.
