What 'winter sun' really means from London
Three tiers. Short haul — the Canaries, Madeira, Morocco: four hours, 20–24°C, warm enough for a pool, not for the sea. Mid haul — the Gulf, Cape Verde, Egypt: six to seven hours, 26–29°C, dependable. Long haul — Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Thailand, the Caribbean: ten to eleven hours, 30–32°C, sea at 28°C.
The jump in reliability happens somewhere past six hours. Below that you are still buying a probability; beyond it, in the right months, you are buying a near-certainty.

November — transitional almost everywhere in the Indian Ocean; the Gulf and Caribbean are the safer picks. December — the south-west of Sri Lanka, the Maldives and the Caribbean all come good; festive pricing peaks 20 Dec–3 Jan. January — the driest, brightest month across the Indian Ocean and the best all-round choice. February — as good as January with slightly warmer seas; half term pushes prices up for one week. March — the value month: still dry, fewer people, 10–20% cheaper than January.
The honest cost comparison
Per person, seven nights, luxury level, flights included from London: Canaries £900–£1,600. Dubai £1,800–£3,200. Caribbean £3,200–£6,000. Maldives £3,700–£9,000. Sri Lanka £2,700–£4,500 — and that figure includes a private car and chauffeur-guide throughout, which none of the others do.
Why Sri Lanka wins the value argument
December to April is the island's dry season on the south and west coasts. You get beach hotels at Tangalle and Weligama that stand comparison with the Maldives, leopard safaris at Yala, tea estates at 1,900m, and a UNESCO cultural triangle — in one trip, on one flight, with no internal air fare beyond an optional seaplane.

Nowhere is truly guaranteed, but the closest things are Sri Lanka's south and west coasts, the Maldives, southern Thailand's west coast, the Canaries and the Caribbean between December and March. Of those, Sri Lanka and Thailand give you a country to explore as well as the beach.
How far do you have to fly for reliable winter sun?+
Four hours gets you the Canaries at 21–23°C. Eight to nine hours gets you the Caribbean or the Gulf at 27–30°C. Ten to eleven hours gets you Sri Lanka, the Maldives and Thailand at 30–32°C with warm sea. Beyond about six hours the weather stops being a gamble.
Which month is best for winter sun?+
January and February are the driest and most reliable across the Indian Ocean and Caribbean. December is excellent but carries festive pricing. March is the sweet spot — still dry, noticeably cheaper, and quieter than half term.
What does a winter sun trip cost from the UK in 2026?+
A week in the Canaries at four-star level is £700–£1,200 per person. The Caribbean at luxury level is £2,500–£5,000. The Maldives is £3,000–£8,000. Sri Lanka at genuine luxury runs £2,600–£4,800 for ten nights including safari and tea country, which is why it keeps winning on value.
Is Sri Lanka good for winter sun?+
It is one of the best options in the calendar. December to April is the south-west dry season: 30–32°C, low humidity by tropical standards, sea temperatures around 28°C, and no hurricane risk. Add leopards, tea estates and a 2,000-year-old cultural triangle and it out-does a pure beach destination.
When should I book winter sun?+
For Christmas and New Year, eight to eleven months ahead — the best hotels in Sri Lanka and the Maldives sell out by March. For January to March, five to seven months gives you full choice. Late availability at the luxury end is rare rather than cheap.
Where has the best value winter sun in 2026?+
Sri Lanka, comfortably. You get Maldives-grade beach hotels, private guiding and internal travel for roughly half the equivalent Maldivian or Caribbean cost, and there is no resort-island premium on food and drink.
Is winter sun worth the long flight with children?+
Ten hours overnight from London to Colombo is one sleep, and the time difference is 5.5 hours forward — easier on children than a Caribbean trip that shifts them backwards. Direct flights, family villas with staff and short internal drives make it manageable.
