The luxury stays

The Kandy House — nine rooms in a restored 1804 ambassador's residence, the most romantic option. Madulkelle — tented suites 45 minutes north facing the Knuckles range. Santani — Sri Lanka's leading wellness retreat; 45 minutes from Kandy, worth two nights on its own.

What to do in Kandy

Evening puja at the Temple of the Tooth (private guide), Peradeniya Botanical Gardens at sunrise, a tea estate lunch, a private Kandyan dance performance, Knuckles range walk with a naturalist (Madulkelle base), and a slow lake circuit by tuk-tuk at sunset.

Best time to visit

Year-round — Kandy sits at a comfortable 500m. December–April is driest; July–August coincides with the Esala Perahera if you want the cultural spectacle.

Fitting Kandy into your itinerary

One night between the cultural triangle and the tea country, or two with Santani for a wellness layer. From Kandy, the reserved first-class train to Hatton (for Ceylon Tea Trails) or all the way to Ella is the cinematic transfer.

Answers

Common questions

What are the best luxury hotels in Kandy?+

Madulkelle Tea & Eco Lodge (45 minutes north for the Knuckles view), The Kandy House (a restored 1804 ambassador's residence), Theva Residency (the lake view), and Santani Wellness (a 45-minute drive for the spa).

Is the Temple of the Tooth worth visiting?+

Yes — Sri Lanka's most sacred Buddhist temple. We arrange a private after-hours visit during the evening puja with a monk, far quieter than the daytime crowds.

How many nights should I spend in Kandy?+

One to two nights is the standard. One is enough for the temple, the lake walk and a tea estate lunch. Two if you want to add the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens and a Knuckles walk with a naturalist.

Is Kandy or Nuwara Eliya the better hill-country base?+

Different things. Kandy is cultural — temple, dance, gardens — sitting at 500m. Nuwara Eliya is true tea country at 1,800m: cool nights, plantations, colonial bungalows. Most itineraries include both.

Should I take the train from Kandy to Ella?+

Yes — it is widely considered the most beautiful train ride in the world. Reserve the first-class observation carriage 30 days ahead; we secure private compartments where possible.

Is the Esala Perahera worth planning around?+

If your dates allow — yes. The full-moon procession in July or August is one of Asia's great cultural spectacles. We secure balcony seats above the parade route and pair it with a luxury Kandy stay.
