The luxury stays
98 Acres Resort & Spa — stone bungalows on a working tea estate facing Ella Rock; the view from the infinity pool at sunrise is the postcard. Sapphirine Reverie — a single-villa estate, ideal for honeymooners who want absolute privacy. Nine Skies (45 minutes away in Demodara) — five suites in a restored planter's bungalow; arguably the most refined hill-country stay on the island.
Best time to visit
January to early April is the headline window — clear views, dry trails, cool evenings. October half-term works well too; mornings are misty and the hills are at their greenest after the southwest monsoon. May–September brings short afternoon showers but is still very workable.
What you actually do here
Dawn climb of Little Adam's Peak (45 minutes, gentle), the Nine Arches Bridge for the 6.40am train pass, Ella Rock for the more committed, Ravana Falls and Diyaluma as day trips, a tea-factory tour with a fourth-generation planter, and long lawn lunches on the estate.
Fitting Ella into your itinerary
Ella sits naturally between Ceylon Tea Trails (or Nuwara Eliya) and Yala. UK travellers on 12–14 nights typically run: Sigiriya (2n) → Kandy (1n) → Tea Trails (3n) → train to Ella (2n) → Yala (2n) → south coast (3–4n). We use helicopter transfers to compress the longest legs.

Common questions
Where should I stay in Ella for a luxury holiday?+
98 Acres on the tea estate facing Ella Rock, the single-villa Sapphirine Reverie for honeymooners, and Nine Skies (45 minutes away in Demodara) for the most refined hill-country bungalow in Sri Lanka.
When is the best time to visit Ella?+
January to early April is the headline season — clear mornings, cool 16–24°C evenings, dry hiking conditions. July to September is also fine; rain tends to fall in short late-afternoon bursts.
How many nights should I spend in Ella?+
Two to three nights. One for Little Adam's Peak and the Nine Arches Bridge, one for the train arrival and a slow estate afternoon, and an optional third for Diyaluma Falls or a tea-factory morning.
Is the Kandy–Ella train worth doing in first class?+
Yes — book the reserved first-class observation carriage at least 30 days ahead. We secure private compartments and side-loading for film crews and honeymooners; the Nanu Oya–Ella stretch is the cinematic one.
Can I combine Ella with Yala safari?+
Yes — Yala is a 3-hour scenic drive south. The classic luxury sequence is tea country (3n) → Ella (2n) → Yala (2n) → south coast beach (3–5n).
Is Ella too touristy for a luxury trip?+
The village itself is busy by day. Stay on a tea estate above the valley (98 Acres, Sapphirine, Nine Skies), do the hikes at dawn, and you experience a completely different Ella from the backpacker scene.
