July weather
The east and north are dry and hot at 30–33°C. The south-west remains showery but rarely washed out — mornings are often clear. The hill country is windy and atmospheric, with the famous horizontal mist over Nuwara Eliya.
The Gathering at Minneriya
July is peak. As the reservoir shrinks, 200–300 elephants converge to feed and bathe. We schedule private jeeps for the late-afternoon light and stay at Wild Coast-standard camps or the Habarana lodges nearby.
Esala Perahera, Kandy
The island's greatest procession — caparisoned tuskers, whip-crackers, fire dancers and the Sacred Tooth Relic — runs over ten nights in late July or August. Grandstand seating and hotel balconies are booked a year out; we hold both.

Common questions
Is July a good time to visit Sri Lanka?+
Yes, if you route east and north-central. It is the peak of The Gathering, the Perahera season, and the east coast beaches are at their best.
When is the Kandy Esala Perahera?+
It runs for ten nights ending on the Nikini full moon, usually in late July or early August. Exact dates are set by the temple each year — ask us and we will confirm for your travel year.
Where should families go in July?+
Cultural Triangle for elephants and Sigiriya, then Trincomalee or Pasikuda for beach. It is our standard British summer-holiday route.
Is the south coast worth it in July?+
Only as a short add-on. Seas are rough and rain is frequent — the east coast is the better beach in July.
