The luxury stays
Ceylon Tea Trails — five restored planter's bungalows across the Bogawantalawa Valley, the only Relais & Châteaux property in Sri Lanka. Nine Skies in Demodara — five suites in the most beautifully designed hill bungalow on the island. The Grand Hotel in town for old-world legacy nights.
What to do here
Dawn at Horton Plains and World's End, master-led tea plucking and factory tour, lawn high tea, salmon fishing on Castlereagh Reservoir, Lipton's Seat at sunrise (the original tea baron's view), and slow cross-bungalow walks between the Tea Trails properties.
Best time to visit
January–April is the headline season; mornings are crisp, the gardens are flowering, and Horton Plains is at its driest. August–September is the secondary window. Always pack a layer — nights drop to 8–14°C.
Fitting tea country into your itinerary
Two to three nights, slotted between Kandy and Ella. Three is the sweet spot: one to arrive and walk, one for Horton Plains and tea, one to do nothing but eat on the lawn. From Nanu Oya the reserved train to Ella is the cinematic continuation.

Common questions
Where should I stay in Nuwara Eliya?+
Ceylon Tea Trails — five colonial bungalows across the Bogawantalawa Valley, the only Relais & Châteaux property in Sri Lanka. Nine Skies in Demodara for a more intimate planter's bungalow. The Grand Hotel in town for old-world legacy.
Is Nuwara Eliya worth the climb up?+
Yes — at 1,800m the air, the colour and the light are completely different from the rest of the island. It is the only place in Sri Lanka where you'll want a fire lit at dinner. Two nights minimum.
What is the best time to visit Nuwara Eliya?+
January to April for the clearest weather and the April Season festivities. August to September is also lovely. Nights are cool year-round (8–14°C); pack a layer even in February.
Is Horton Plains and World's End worth the early start?+
Absolutely — depart 5.30am to reach the cliff before the cloud rolls in (usually by 10am). The full loop including Baker's Falls is 9km; flat for the most part. We pair it with a hot breakfast on return to the bungalow.
Ceylon Tea Trails or Nine Skies — which?+
Tea Trails for the legacy, the lawns and the cross-bungalow walking; Nine Skies for the intimacy, the design and the food. Both for a longer hill-country chapter (we often split 2+2).
How does Nuwara Eliya fit a UK itinerary?+
Two to three nights between Kandy and Ella. The classic 14-night UK route: Sigiriya (2n) → Kandy (1n) → Ceylon Tea Trails / Nuwara Eliya (3n) → Ella (2n) → Yala (2n) → south coast (4n).
