Galle is a Dutch-colonial walled port on Sri Lanka's south-west coast, 125km from Colombo — about 90 minutes on the southern expressway. The Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage site and free to walk; the pleasure is in the ramparts at sunset, the boutiques on Pedlar Street and the villas inside the walls. Two to three nights, ideally as the civilised bookend to a beach stay further east.
