The two coasts, simply

Sri Lanka has two coasts on opposite monsoon cycles. The south and west coasts are at their best December–April: dry, warm sea, peak luxury hotel season. The east coast is at its best May–September: when the south is wet, the east is sunny. Get the season right and the beach is faultless.

Where to stay — south coast

Tangalle: Amanwella, ANI Sri Lanka, Anantara Peace Haven. Long empty crescents, low palms, no crowds.

Mirissa / Weligama: Cape Weligama for the iconic clifftop pool; close to whale-watching.

Galle / Hiriketiya: Amangalla inside the fort plus Kayaam House at Talalla for the boutique alternative.

Where to stay — east coast (May–Sep)

Pasikuda: Anantara Pasikuda for the calm-lagoon family beach. Trincomalee: Jungle Beach by Uga for the quieter, palm-cove style. Nilaveli: Trinco Blu for affordable luxury.

The classic 10-night beach holiday

Nights 1–4: Cultural triangle or tea country opener — Sigiriya or Tea Trails.

Nights 5–10: South coast — six nights at Cape Weligama, ANI or Amanwella. Whale-watching, private chef beach dinner, optional Yala safari day-trip.

Indicative cost 2026 (per person, land-only)

10 nights with 5–6 beach nights: £3,800–£6,500. ANI villa upgrade: £6,500–£9,500 per person. With Maldives finish: £8,500–£12,500 per couple combined.

Common questions

Best beach in Sri Lanka for a luxury holiday?+

South coast: Tangalle (long empty crescents, Amanwella, ANI Sri Lanka, Anantara Peace Haven), Talalla (quieter still, Talalla Retreat, Kayaam House), Mirissa (whale-watching, Cape Weligama clifftop). East coast: Pasikuda (calm lagoon, May–Sep) and Trincomalee.

When is the best time for a Sri Lanka beach holiday?+

South and west coasts: December–April (peak season, dry, warm sea). East coast: May–September (the south's wet season is the east's dry season). Avoid May–September on the south coast — swell, rain, jellyfish.

What does a Sri Lanka beach holiday cost from the UK?+

£3,800–£6,500 per person for 10 nights at a luxury level, land-only. Flights: £750–£950 per person economy, £1,800–£3,000 premium economy. Cape Weligama is around £750/night room-only; ANI Sri Lanka is from £2,200/night villa-only.

Sri Lanka beach vs Maldives?+

Maldives wins for resort isolation and overwater bungalows. Sri Lanka wins for actual beach, longer stretches, and far better value. Many UK clients combine: 7 nights Sri Lanka, 4 nights Maldives, ~£15,000 per couple total.

Is the sea safe to swim in?+

Yes, in season, at sheltered south-coast bays (Talalla, Hiriketiya, Unawatuna) and east-coast lagoons (Pasikuda, Nilaveli). Open south-coast beaches in shoulder season can have strong rips — we steer you to where it's calm.

Are there overwater villas in Sri Lanka?+

No — Sri Lanka doesn't have the reef-and-lagoon geography for overwater bungalows. What it has instead: cliff-top suites at Cape Weligama, fully-staffed beachfront villas at ANI, and tented luxury at Wild Coast.

Family-friendly beach hotels?+

Anantara Peace Haven (Tangalle, kids' club, calm lagoon), Cape Weligama (cliff-top with the famous moon-shaped pool, kids welcomed), Amanwella (older children only, ages 6+). All bookable through us.

How many beach nights are enough?+

5–7 nights at one base, after a 4–5 night cultural or hill country opener. 10 nights pure beach gets repetitive; 5–7 is paradise. Most of our UK clients land on a 4-night cultural opener + 6-night beach finish.
