Kandy is Sri Lanka's cultural capital, 115km (3–3.5 hours by car) inland from Colombo at 500m elevation, set around a lake and built round the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. Visit the temple for the 6.30pm puja, allow half a day for the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya, and keep the stay short — one or two nights is plenty before continuing to the tea country by train.
