The point of a second centre
A multi centre trip exists to solve one problem: no single place does everything. A beach island has no culture; a cultural country has a compromised beach. Splitting the trip lets you have both properly rather than either badly — but only if the contrast is real and the transfer is short.
If both legs feel similar, you have added a travel day for nothing.
Pairings that work from the UK
Sri Lanka + Maldives — one hour by air, total contrast, one airline ticket. The benchmark. Sri Lanka + Dubai — a two-night stopover that breaks the flight and adds nothing to the fare on Emirates. Thailand + Maldives — longer and pricier, similar shape. Within Sri Lanka — cultural triangle, tea country and south coast is a three-centre trip in its own right with no flights at all.

How to split the nights
10 nights: 7 touring + 3 island. 14 nights: 10 + 4 — the best-balanced fortnight there is. 17–21 nights: 12 + 5, with two nights of that touring leg on the coast so the pace never spikes.
Three nights is the practical minimum for a second centre. Two means one usable day after transfers, at full nightly rate.
Logistics, honestly
Colombo to Malé is a 75-minute flight, then a seaplane or speedboat to the resort — seaplanes only run in daylight, which is the single constraint that shapes these itineraries. Book the Colombo–Malé leg in the morning and the whole day works; book it late and you lose a night to an airport hotel.
Budget £350–£900 per person for the internal flight plus seaplane transfer, and treat luggage allowances as the thing to check first — seaplanes are strict.
Sequencing
Active leg first, always. Temples, driving and safari while you are fresh; water and nothing at all at the end. It also means the jet lag lands on the busy days rather than the expensive beach ones.

What is a multi centre holiday?+
A single trip split across two or more destinations — typically a touring or cultural leg followed by a beach or island leg. Everything is booked as one itinerary with the internal transfers, flights and transfers arranged for you rather than bought separately.
What are the best multi centre holidays from the UK?+
Sri Lanka and the Maldives is the strongest pairing on flight logistics and contrast. Others that work well: Sri Lanka and Dubai as a stopover, Thailand and the Maldives, Kenya and Zanzibar, and within Sri Lanka a three-centre split of cultural triangle, tea country and coast.
How should I split the nights?+
As a rule, two-thirds touring and one-third beach. For a fortnight that means ten nights in Sri Lanka and four in the Maldives. Fewer than three nights in a second country rarely justifies the transfer time and cost.
Are multi centre holidays more expensive?+
Modestly. The extra cost is the internal flight or seaplane and one additional transfer day — typically £350–£900 per person for a Sri Lanka–Maldives pairing. The airfare from London is usually the same because you fly in and out of Colombo or Malé on one ticket.
How much does a multi centre holiday cost?+
Ten nights in Sri Lanka plus four in the Maldives runs £6,000–£11,000 per person at luxury level including flights from London. A three-centre Sri Lanka trip — culture, tea, coast — runs £3,400–£6,000 for ten to fourteen nights.
What order should the destinations go in?+
Active first, restful last. Do the driving, the temples and the safari while you still have energy, and end on the beach. Reversing it means arriving home tired, and it also means you spend the beach days worrying about the itinerary to come.
Do I need separate visas?+
For Sri Lanka and the Maldives, both are straightforward for British passport holders — Sri Lanka needs an ETA applied for online, the Maldives issues a free 30-day visa on arrival. Add Dubai as a stopover and UK passport holders get a visa on arrival too.
