The best twin centres from the UK
Sri Lanka and the Maldives is the one we build most, and the one that survives scrutiny: 75 minutes apart, opposite in character, and a combined price that undercuts two separate long-haul trips by a wide margin. Sri Lanka and Dubai is the cheapest twin centre going, since Emirates lets you break the journey at no fare penalty. Sri Lanka and Singapore works eastbound. Kenya and Zanzibar is the African equivalent of the same idea.
How to divide the nights
10 nights: 7 Sri Lanka + 3 Maldives. 14 nights: 10 + 4 — the best-value fortnight in the Indian Ocean. 7 nights: honestly, stay in one country; a week split two ways is two half-holidays.
The second centre should be the shorter and the more expensive of the two. That is what keeps the total sensible while still giving you the water.
Transfers and timing
Colombo–Malé is a short morning flight; Maldivian seaplanes only fly in daylight, so a late arrival costs you a night in a Malé airport hotel. We build every twin centre backwards from the seaplane window, which is the single most common thing DIY bookings get wrong.
Internal flight plus seaplane: £350–£900 per person. Speedboat resorts are cheaper and less weather-dependent, but limit which islands you can use.
What each half is for
Sri Lanka gives you leopards at Yala, the Kandy–Ella train, tea estates at 1,900m, Sigiriya and Galle Fort, and beach hotels good enough that some people never leave. The Maldives gives you water no other country has and an absence of obligation. Together they cover both moods; apart, each leaves something wanting.

If you have ten nights or fewer and it is your first visit to Sri Lanka, stay put — you will not run out of country. Twin centres pay off from twelve nights up, or when one traveller wants activity and the other wants a lounger.

Usually not. You fly London–Colombo out and Malé–London back on the same ticket, so the only additional air cost is the short internal hop, which is typically £180–£350 per person.
Can families do twin centre trips?+
Yes, and the sequencing matters more. Put the driving-heavy leg first while children are fresh, keep single drives under three hours, and pick a Maldivian resort with a genuine kids' club rather than an adults-only island.
