Why the pairing works so well
Sri Lanka gives you everything the Maldives cannot — eight UNESCO sites, hill country railways, leopards, a food culture worth flying for. The Maldives gives you the one thing Sri Lanka does not quite match: absolute stillness on water the colour of glass.
Seventy-five minutes apart, with several daily flights, they are effectively one destination for planning purposes.
The right night split
10 + 4 (14 nights): the classic. Cultural triangle, tea country, a safari and the south coast, then four Maldivian nights to decompress.
7 + 5 (12 nights): best for honeymooners. A tighter Sri Lanka loop — Sigiriya, Kandy, Tea Trails, Galle — and a longer island finish.
5 + 4 (9 nights): the shortest that does not feel frantic. Skip the cultural triangle and do tea country plus coast.
14 + 5 (19 nights): the full island including the east coast, then a proper stay.
Months that suit both
January–March: ideal for both. Dry in the Maldives, dry on Sri Lanka's west and south.
December: excellent weather, peak pricing, book 8 months ahead.
April: hot in Sri Lanka but still lovely; Maldives transitioning.
July–August: use Sri Lanka's east coast (Trincomalee, Pasikuda) and accept occasional Maldivian squalls in exchange for materially lower rates.
Choosing the Maldivian half
North Malé and South Malé atolls mean a 20–45 minute speedboat and no seaplane timing constraints — best if you land in the afternoon. Baa and Noonu atolls need a seaplane and daylight, but deliver the reefs and the privacy. Southern atolls need a domestic flight and are worth it only for stays of five nights or more.
For honeymooners we most often use Soneva Jani, Cheval Blanc Randheli, Joali and Milaidhoo; for families, Soneva Fushi and Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru.

Can you combine Sri Lanka and the Maldives in one holiday?+
Easily — it is the most popular twin-centre in the Indian Ocean. Colombo to Malé is a 75-minute flight with several daily services on SriLankan Airlines. Most people do Sri Lanka first for the touring and finish in the Maldives for the beach.
How long should I spend in each?+
Seven to ten nights in Sri Lanka and four to five in the Maldives is the sweet spot. Sri Lanka needs a week minimum to cover culture, tea country and safari without rushing; the Maldives is perfect at four or five nights and starts to feel long after seven.
Which order — Sri Lanka or Maldives first?+
Sri Lanka first, almost always. Touring while you are fresh and finishing horizontal on a beach is the right emotional shape, and it means you fly home from Malé rested rather than sunburnt and then straight into a five-hour drive.
What does a Sri Lanka and Maldives holiday cost from the UK?+
For 10 nights Sri Lanka plus 5 nights Maldives, land-only per person sharing: £5,500–£8,500 at luxury level, £11,000–£20,000 at ultra-luxury (Aman plus a Soneva or Cheval Blanc). Add £900–£1,400 for return economy flights from London plus the Colombo–Malé hop at roughly £180–£280 per person.
When is the best time for both?+
January to March suits both perfectly — Sri Lanka's west and south coasts are dry and the Maldives is in its dry north-east monsoon. December works but prices peak. July and August are good for Sri Lanka's east coast and acceptable in the Maldives, with the trade-off of occasional squalls.
Do I need a separate visa for the Maldives?+
No. Maldives grants a free 30-day visa on arrival to British and EU passport holders. Sri Lanka requires an ETA, applied for online before travel. Both are straightforward and we handle the guidance for each.
Is there a direct flight between them?+
Yes. SriLankan Airlines flies Colombo to Malé several times daily, around 75 minutes. Schedule it for mid-morning so you land in time for the seaplane transfer to your island, which only operates in daylight.
Can we skip Colombo on the way through?+
Yes. If your Sri Lanka trip ends in the south, we usually route Galle or Tangalle to Colombo airport by road, or use a domestic seaplane from Koggala to shorten the day considerably.
