The half-term case for Sri Lanka
February half-term sits in the heart of Sri Lanka's southern dry season — guaranteed sunshine, calm seas and short distances between hotels. A direct LHR–CMB flight gets you on the beach within 24 hours of the school bell.
What works for British families
Yala leopard safari with naturalist-led drives. Cooking classes in Galle. Surf lessons in Weligama and Hiriketiya. Snorkelling at Pigeon Island. Cultural triangle day trips by helicopter to keep travel time short.
Best months for UK family travel
February half-term and Easter are ideal for the south. October half-term suits both coasts. Summer holidays (July–August) are best spent on the east coast — Pasikuda, Trincomalee — and Yala.

Common questions
Is Sri Lanka good for a UK family half-term?+
Yes — February half-term falls in peak Sri Lankan dry season on the south coast. Direct flights from London Heathrow make it one of the few long-haul destinations that fits a one-week half-term comfortably.
What age children is Sri Lanka best for?+
Sri Lanka is wonderful from age five upwards. Yala safari, surf lessons in Weligama, cooking classes and snorkelling all work brilliantly for primary and secondary-age children.
How long should a family trip from the UK be?+
Ten to fourteen nights is the sweet spot. A week works only with the south coast loop; ten nights opens up safari and tea country.
Are luxury hotels in Sri Lanka family-friendly?+
Many are — Anantara Peace Haven, Cape Weligama, Wild Coast Tented Lodge and Shangri-La Hambantota all welcome families. We curate room configurations, connecting villas and kids' menus in advance.
Is Sri Lanka good for families with young children?+
Excellent. Short transfers, gentle culture, baby elephant orphanage at Pinnawala, easy beach swimming on the south coast, family villas with private pools and chefs. Many of our family suites sleep 2+2 with interconnecting rooms.
How much does a family luxury trip to Sri Lanka cost?+
From £4,500pp for 10 nights at the luxury level (two adults + two children). The big saving is shared villas — a four-bedroom private villa with chef and butlers often costs less per person than two ultra-luxury hotel rooms.
Which months work for UK school holidays?+
February half-term and Easter are gold (dry south coast). October half-term is excellent value with both coasts working. Christmas is peak season — book six to nine months ahead. Summer holidays suit the east coast and cultural triangle.
