The one-line answer
Choose Bali for the iconic cliff-resort honeymoon with a polished restaurant scene. Choose Sri Lanka for a direct UK flight, more variety per trip, and noticeably emptier beaches.
Flights — Sri Lanka wins
SriLankan Airlines runs a daily non-stop from London Heathrow to Colombo (~10h 30m). Bali has no direct UK service in 2026; you'll connect via Singapore, Dubai or Doha, with 16–22 hours door-to-door. For a 10-night honeymoon, that's two extra travel days you don't get back.
Cost
Land cost is similar: £8,800–£12,000 per couple for 10 nights at a luxury level in either country. Flights tilt toward Sri Lanka: £750–£950 per person to Colombo in premium economy vs £950–£1,400 to Denpasar with a stop. Total: Sri Lanka is typically £600–£900 per couple cheaper.
What each does best
Bali: Ubud rice-terrace villas, Uluwatu cliff resorts, the world-class restaurant scene, surf-and-spa rhythm.
Sri Lanka: tea country at Ceylon Tea Trails, a leopard safari at Yala, the train through the hills to Ella, Galle Fort, and a beach finish at Cape Weligama or ANI — all in one trip with a private chauffeur.
Beaches, honestly
Bali's headline beaches (Jimbaran, Uluwatu, Nusa Dua) are excellent but increasingly busy. Sri Lanka's south coast (Tangalle, Mirissa, Talalla) is wilder and significantly emptier — long crescents with two or three luxury villas and otherwise no one.
Which to choose
Pick Bali if you want one resort, a polished restaurant scene, and don't mind the flight. Pick Sri Lanka if you want variety, a direct flight, and the honeymoon to feel like an expedition rather than a stay.

Common questions
Is Sri Lanka or Bali cheaper for a honeymoon from the UK?+
Roughly comparable on the ground (£8,800–£12,000 per couple for 10 nights at a luxury level), but flights from London are typically £300–£500 cheaper to Colombo than Denpasar because Sri Lanka has a daily direct on SriLankan Airlines and Bali doesn't have any direct UK route.
Which has better beaches for a honeymoon?+
Bali for the iconic Indian Ocean beach-and-cliff hotel (Bulgari, Four Seasons Jimbaran, Alila Uluwatu). Sri Lanka for empty, undeveloped beaches with serious privacy — Tangalle, Mirissa, Talalla. Bali's beaches are busier; Sri Lanka's are quieter.
Direct flights from the UK?+
Sri Lanka: yes — daily Heathrow to Colombo on SriLankan Airlines (~10h 30m). Bali: no direct flights from the UK; expect 1–2 stops via Singapore, Dubai or Doha, 16–22 hours total. This alone makes Sri Lanka the easier honeymoon.
Which has more honeymoon variety?+
Sri Lanka. You can do tea country + safari + Galle Fort + south-coast beach in 10 nights with a private driver. Bali is mostly Ubud + a beach base — different villas, similar rhythm. Sri Lanka delivers more 'moments' per trip.
Which has better food?+
Both excellent in different ways. Bali has the polished international restaurant scene (Locavore, Mosaic, Mauri). Sri Lanka has the deeper local cuisine — rice and curry, hoppers, kottu, plus rising fine-dining at the luxury hotels.
Better for a honeymoon if you want pure resort relaxation?+
Bali, marginally. Four Seasons Jimbaran or Bulgari Uluwatu are designed for not-leaving-the-resort honeymoons. Sri Lanka rewards a touring honeymoon more than a base-and-bask one — though Cape Weligama or ANI gets close.
Which is safer in 2026?+
Both are well within FCDO 'see our advice and prepare' guidance — neither is on a 'do not travel' list. Sri Lanka has been politically stable since 2023; Bali is its usual self. We've sent dozens of UK honeymooners to both in 2025–2026 without incident.
Can we combine Sri Lanka and Bali?+
Geographically awkward — no direct flights between them, expect a Singapore or Kuala Lumpur stop. We typically recommend choosing one and adding the Maldives for a beach finish instead of combining the two.
