What Sri Lanka does best for wildlife

Sri Lanka holds the highest leopard density on earth in Yala Block 1, the only place to reliably see hundreds of wild Asian elephants in one herd (Minneriya/Kaudulla, August–September), and one of three places in the world to see the blue whale from shore (Mirissa, December–April).

The classic 10-night wildlife tour

Nights 1–2: Wilpattu — Mahoora mobile camp or Big Game Camps, two full game drives, sloth bear and leopard.

Nights 3–5: Cultural triangle base with day safaris to Minneriya / Kaudulla (Aug–Sep) for the elephant gathering.

Nights 6–7: Tea country — Ceylon Tea Trails, leopard at Horton Plains, endemic birding.

Nights 8–10: Yala — Wild Coast Tented Lodge, three full game drives in Block 1, ending with whale-watching from Mirissa.

What's included

Private jeeps with naturalist for every drive · early gate entry at Yala Block 1 · luxury tented or hard-build lodges throughout · private chauffeur for inter-region transfers · all meals at safari camps (typically all-inclusive) · private blue whale charter from Mirissa (in season).

Indicative cost 2026 (per person, land-only)

10 nights, luxury wildlife-focused: £4,800–£7,500. 14 nights with beach finish: £6,500–£9,500. Sole-use mobile camp upgrade: +£800–£1,200 per couple per night.

Answers

Common questions

What wildlife will I see in Sri Lanka?+

Leopards (highest density on earth at Yala Block 1), Asian elephants (Minneriya gathering Aug–Sep is one of the great wildlife spectacles), sloth bears (Wilpattu, May–Jun), blue whales (Mirissa, Dec–Apr), sperm whales (Trincomalee, Mar–Apr), plus 433 bird species.

Best safari park in Sri Lanka?+

Yala for leopards (Block 1, 5am gate), Wilpattu for sloth bears and a quieter jungle feel, Udawalawe for guaranteed wild elephants, Minneriya/Kaudulla for the elephant gathering. Each excels in different months.

What does a Sri Lanka wildlife tour cost?+

£4,800–£7,500 per person for 10 nights of luxury wildlife-focused travel, land-only — Wild Coast Tented Lodge, Leopard Trails mobile camp, Mahoora at Wilpattu, plus a south-coast hotel for whale-watching.

Are safaris private?+

Yes. Every safari we arrange is private — your own jeep, your own naturalist, no shared seats. Most of our clients also stay at properties (Wild Coast, Leopard Trails) where the lead trackers are on staff.

Best time for a wildlife tour?+

February–April hits the perfect overlap: dry season at Yala (best leopard sightings), peak blue whale season at Mirissa, and pre-monsoon clear weather. Aug–Sep is the only time for the Minneriya elephant gathering.

Can I combine wildlife and beach?+

Yes — almost every wildlife tour we design ends at Cape Weligama, ANI or Amanwella for 3–4 beach nights. Yala is only 2 hours from Tangalle.

Family-friendly?+

Yes, from age 6. Younger children find full-day safaris hard going; we shorten the drives and add elephant orphanage visits at Pinnawala or Udawalawe for under-6s.

How are you different from a standard safari operator?+

We're Sri Lankan, based in Colombo, with direct relationships at every lodge. We book the lead naturalists by name (not 'whoever's available'), arrange Block 1 entry at gate-open, and never share a jeep with strangers.
