January weather, coast by coast
The south and west coasts sit at 29–31°C with very little rain — this is the driest stretch of the year. The hill country is crisp: 18–20°C by day and genuinely cool after dark, so pack a jumper for Nuwara Eliya evenings. The east coast (Trincomalee, Pasikuda) is out of season and best left for July and August.
Where to go in January
Classic January routing: Cultural Triangle first (Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa) while mornings are cool, then the tea country by train, then a long finish on the south coast between Galle and Tangalle. Yala is dry and productive, and Mirissa's blue whales are already running.

Is January a good time to visit Sri Lanka?+
Yes — it is one of the two or three best months. The south-west monsoon is long gone, the south and west coasts are dry and sunny at 29–31°C, seas are calm for whale watching, and the Cultural Triangle is comfortable in the mornings.
Does it rain in Sri Lanka in January?+
Very little on the south and west coasts, which see only a handful of short showers. The north-east — Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Jaffna — is still catching the tail of the north-east monsoon, so we route away from it.
How much does a January holiday to Sri Lanka cost?+

Is January better than February in Sri Lanka?+
