April weather and the monsoon turn
The first half of April is hot and mostly dry — 31–33°C on the coasts. From mid-April the inter-monsoon builds and afternoon thunderstorms become common in the south-west, usually short and dramatic rather than trip-ruining. The east coast begins to dry out.
Sinhala & Tamil New Year
Avurudu falls around 13–14 April and is the island's biggest family festival. Expect closed shops for a couple of days, milk rice, oil-lamp rituals and village games. Hotels run their own celebrations; we can arrange a private family invitation in the hill country.
Easter half-term routes
For UK families, April is a strong Easter window: a Cultural Triangle opener, two nights in the tea hills, then a beach base south of Galle. Book Easter week nine to twelve months ahead — it prices like Christmas at the best properties.

Answers
Common questions
Is April a good time to visit Sri Lanka?+
Yes, particularly the first half. It is hot but largely dry in the south and west, the festival calendar is at its most interesting, and the east coast starts to come good.
Does it rain in April in Sri Lanka?+
Rain builds from mid-April as the inter-monsoon arrives — mostly short, heavy afternoon storms in the south-west rather than all-day rain.
What is Sinhala and Tamil New Year?+
Avurudu, celebrated around 13–14 April, is the island's principal festival: family rituals, auspicious timings, sweetmeats and village games. Some businesses close for two or three days.
Is April good for a family Easter holiday?+
It works well. Direct UK flights, a short transfer to the coast, warm sea and a route that mixes ruins, elephants and beach. Easter week itself is peak-priced, so book early.
