The monsoon flip

The Yala (south-west) monsoon typically arrives in mid-to-late May, bringing wind and rain to the west and south coasts. Simultaneously the east coast dries out and settles into its finest months. Route east and May is a genuinely excellent month.

Where to go in May

Cultural Triangle, then Trincomalee or Pasikuda for beach and diving, with Wilpattu and Minneriya for wildlife. Kandy and the eastern hills stay pleasant. Avoid committing to a Galle-to-Tangalle beach finish this month.

Value in May

South-coast luxury rates fall 30–40% and availability is wide open. If you are flexible on where — not whether — you go to the beach, May delivers the best pound-for-pound luxury of the year. Vesak, the Buddhist full-moon festival, lights the whole island.

Answers

Common questions

Is May a bad time to visit Sri Lanka?+

Not if you route east. The south-west monsoon brings rain to Galle and Bentota, but Trincomalee, Pasikuda and Arugam Bay are entering their best season.

Which beaches are good in May?+

Trincomalee, Nilaveli, Uppuveli and Pasikuda on the east coast, plus Arugam Bay for surfers from late May onwards.

How much cheaper is May?+

Expect 30–40% off peak rates at south-coast and hill-country properties, with excellent last-minute availability.

What is Vesak?+

Vesak marks the Buddha's birth, enlightenment and passing. Falling on the May full moon, it brings lanterns, illuminated pandals and free roadside food stalls across the island — one of the most beautiful nights to be here.
