September weather

The south-west monsoon eases through September, the east coast holds dry until late in the month, and the Cultural Triangle is warm with occasional storms. It is a transitional month, and the trade-off is quiet everywhere.

What September is good for

Ruins without crowds, Wilpattu at its best for leopard, The Gathering still active at Minneriya, and hill-country walking in clear post-monsoon air. Photographers love the light and the greenery.

Answers

Common questions

Is September a good time to visit Sri Lanka?+

It is a good value month rather than a guaranteed-sun month. Expect quiet sites, strong wildlife and occasional storms, with the east coast the safest beach bet until late September.

Is it rainy in September?+

Showers are possible island-wide, usually short. The heavier, more widespread rain arrives with the October inter-monsoon.

Where should I go in September?+

Cultural Triangle, Wilpattu, Kandy and the tea country, with a short east-coast beach stay early in the month.

Is September cheap in Sri Lanka?+

It is among the cheapest months — often 35–45% below January rates at the same hotels.
