Hidden gems most operators miss

Kitulgala — rainforest village, white-water rafting on the Kelani Ganga, where Bridge on the River Kwai was filmed.

Knuckles Mountains — cool-climate trekking with almost no other tourists.

Sinharaja Rainforest — UNESCO World Heritage biodiversity hotspot, endemic birds.

Belihuloya — river-bathing pools and waterfalls in the foothills below Horton Plains.

Jaffna — Tamil culture, distinct cuisine, the northern peninsula's stillness and palmyra palms.

How to combine them

7 nights: two regions properly (cultural triangle + hill country, or hill country + south coast).

10 nights: the five must-dos at a relaxed pace (3 nights cultural triangle, 2 hill country, 1 Kandy, 1 safari, 3 south coast).

14+ nights: add 2 hidden gems and a sole-use villa finish.

Common questions

What's the number-one place to visit in Sri Lanka?+

Sigiriya rock fortress is the single most iconic site — a 5th-century palace on top of a 200m rock with frescoes, gardens and a mirror wall. Best climbed at dawn (06:30) to beat the heat and the coach groups.

Where should I go on a first trip?+

Five must-do regions: Sigiriya / cultural triangle (temples, rock fortress, elephants), Kandy (Temple of the Tooth), hill country (tea estates, scenic train, Ella), Yala (safari for leopards), and the south coast (Galle Fort, Tangalle, Weligama beaches).

Best hidden gems?+

Kitulgala (rainforest, white-water rafting, the Bridge on the River Kwai filming location), Knuckles Mountains (cool-air trekking), Sinharaja Rainforest (UNESCO biodiversity), Jaffna (Tamil culture in the north), and Belihuloya (river-bathing pools in the foothills).

Is Adam's Peak worth climbing?+

Yes if you're reasonably fit and travelling December–May (the pilgrimage season when the stairs are lit). It's a 5,500-step night climb to watch sunrise from the summit — physically demanding but one of the most memorable mornings of any Sri Lanka trip.

Should I visit Colombo?+

One night at the start or end of your trip is plenty for most travellers. The Galle Face Hotel sundowner, Pettah market, Gangaramaya Temple, and dinner at Ministry of Crab cover the highlights. Colombo isn't the reason you came.

Best beach in Sri Lanka?+

Tangalle (long uncrowded golden sand, swimmable), Mirissa (whales and a wide bay), Hiriketiya (a horseshoe surf bay), and Pasikuda on the east coast (May–September only). For total seclusion: the private beach at Amanwella.

Are the ancient cities worth visiting?+

Yes — Polonnaruwa (12th-century capital, best explored by bike) is the most visit-worthy of the ancient cities. Anuradhapura is more sacred and atmospheric but takes longer to appreciate; one is enough for most itineraries.
