Region by region

Cultural triangle. Stay near Sigiriya for the dawn climb. Water Garden Sigiriya is the contemporary luxury choice; Heritance Kandalama is the iconic Bawa forest hotel.

Kandy. Most clients pass through with a single night to see the Temple of the Tooth at dusk. Kandy House and The Wallawwa above the lake are both excellent. Skip the noisy town-centre chain hotels.

Hill country. Hatton is the gateway to Ceylon Tea Trails (the benchmark). Ella is more backpacker-popular but has dramatic views from Nine Arch Bridge. Nuwara Eliya is colder, more colonial — for travellers wanting the "Little England" experience.

Safari. Yala has the highest leopard density in the world but the highest tourist density too; Wild Coast Tented Lodge insulates you from this. Wilpattu is quieter and more atmospheric — fewer guaranteed leopards, more chance of a private sighting.

South coast. The strip from Galle Fort to Tangalle is where most British clients finish their trip. Tangalle for seclusion and Amanwella; Weligama for resort buzz and Cape Weligama; Galle Fort for heritage townhouses inside the ramparts.

Common questions

What's the best area to stay in Sri Lanka?+

For most British travellers, the south coast (between Galle and Tangalle) is the best single base — palm-fringed beaches, the heritage Galle Fort, Weligama surf, Mirissa whales, and good restaurants. But Sri Lanka really rewards staying in three regions: cultural triangle + hill country + south coast.

Where should I stay in the cultural triangle?+

Stay near Sigiriya or Dambulla — both put you within 30 minutes of the rock fortress, Dambulla caves and Minneriya safari. Best hotels: Water Garden Sigiriya, Heritance Kandalama, Wild Grass.

Where to stay in the hill country?+

Hatton for Ceylon Tea Trails (the benchmark luxury), Nuwara Eliya for colonial heritage and golf, Ella for the Nine Arch Bridge and dramatic valley views, Haputale for cool-climate seclusion.

Where to stay on the south coast?+

Tangalle for the most beautiful uncrowded beaches and Amanwella seclusion. Weligama / Mirissa for surf, whales and beach-club energy. Galle Fort for heritage townhouse stays inside the 17th-century Dutch fortifications. Hiriketiya for boho surf calm.

Where to stay for safari?+

Yala (south-east) is the most famous, highest leopard density in the world — stay at Wild Coast Tented Lodge or Chena Huts. Wilpattu (north-west) is quieter with sloth bears — stay at Leopard Trails.

Where on the east coast?+

Trincomalee for white-sand beaches and snorkelling at Pigeon Island (May–September only — closed November–February). Pasikuda for shallow swimming bays. Arugam Bay for surf (April–October).

Should I stay in Colombo?+

One night at the start or end of the trip is enough. Galle Face Hotel for heritage, Shangri-La or Cinnamon Grand for contemporary. Skip Colombo entirely if you're tight on time — go straight from the airport to Sigiriya or Negombo.

How many nights in each region?+

Our standard 10-night split: 3 cultural triangle + 1 Kandy + 2 hill country + 1 safari + 3 south coast. For 14 nights: 3 + 1 + 3 + 2 + 5. For 7 nights, drop either the cultural triangle or the safari.
