What you'll see at Yala
Yala holds an estimated 40+ resident leopards in Block 1 alone — the highest density anywhere. Beyond the headline cat: 250+ wild elephants, sloth bears (rare, magical), saltwater crocodiles, sambar deer, spotted deer, wild boar, and the rare jungle cat. Birders count more than 400 species, including six endemics.
The blocks, briefly
Block 1. The famous one — leopards, elephants, the main entry gate. Busy at peak but unmissable.
Block 5 (Lunugamvehera). The quieter alternative — strong leopard population, a fraction of the jeep traffic.
Blocks 3 & 4. Closed to general visitors, occasional research access.

Chena Huts by Uga Escapes — luxury cabanas with private plunge pools, the strongest ranger team for serious wildlife photographers. From £420 pp/night.

How to do a Yala safari well
Stay 2 nights minimum. One night gives you only one drive — too few rolls of the dice for a guaranteed leopard.
Dawn entry, every time. Animals are active, light is golden, the jeep traffic hasn't arrived. Up at 05:30, in the park by 06:00.
Private jeep, senior ranger. Never share a jeep — you want the freedom to chase a sighting, and you want a ranger who knows the territories well enough to predict where leopards move.
Combine with the south coast. Yala is 90 minutes from Tangalle. The standard route: 2 nights Yala → 3 nights Tangalle → 2 nights Galle Fort.

Common questions
Where is Yala National Park?+
Yala sits on the south-east coast of Sri Lanka, about 5 hours' drive from Colombo or 2 hours from Galle. The nearest airstrip is Mattala (HRI), 45 minutes away — useful when combining safari with the south coast.
Why is Yala famous?+
Yala Block 1 has the highest density of leopards anywhere on earth — more than 1 per square kilometre. Beyond leopards: wild elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, peacocks, and the 400+ bird species that make it one of Asia's top wildlife destinations.
Best time to visit Yala?+
February to July is dry season — water sources shrink, animals concentrate, sightings peak. The park traditionally closes in September each year for maintenance. October–January is wetter but still rewarding.
How crowded is Yala?+
Block 1 can get busy — 20–40 jeeps may converge on a leopard sighting at peak. The fix is straightforward: stay at a luxury camp adjacent to a quieter gate (Wild Coast Tented Lodge, Chena Huts), enter at dawn before the day-trippers, and use a senior ranger who reads where the crowds are heading and goes the opposite direction.
What are the park entry fees?+
About £60 per person per drive in 2026, plus a service fee for the jeep and ranger. Included as standard in our safari packages — no on-the-day surprises.
How long is a Yala game drive?+
Half-day drives run 3–4 hours (dawn 06:00–10:00 or afternoon 14:30–18:30). Full-day drives run 06:00–18:30 with a picnic lunch. Two nights gives you 3 half-day drives — the standard, and usually plenty for a leopard sighting.
Best luxury camp near Yala?+
Wild Coast Tented Lodge (Resplendent Ceylon) is the standout — pod-shaped luxury tents on a wild beach right next to the park, hand-rolled steel bathtubs in some pods, an excellent ranger team. Chena Huts by Uga is the strong runner-up with private plunge pools.
Can you combine Yala with the south coast beaches?+
Yes — this is the standard route. Yala is 90 minutes from Tangalle, 2 hours from Weligama. Most clients do 2 nights Yala then drive west along the coast for 3–5 nights of beach.
