Weather: Cold 5–18°C at altitude; cloud after 9am most days.

Horton Plains is a wind-swept 2,100-metre plateau in the central highlands — UNESCO-listed cloud forest, montane grassland and the dramatic 870-metre cliff known as World's End. It is best walked at first light, before the cloud rolls in.

• · Leave Nuwara Eliya by 5.30am — the view is gone by 9am.
• · Dress warmly and wear walking shoes.
• · No food or vendors on the plateau — bring a packed breakfast.
