Weather: Hot 27–34°C; dry between April and September.

Kumana — once Yala East — is a remote dry-zone park on the south-east coast, reached by 4x4 from Pottuvil or by a long drive around Yala. It has the best birdlife in southern Sri Lanka, almost no other jeeps, and a fair chance of leopard.

• · The eastern access from Arugam Bay is easier than the southern road.
