Polonnaruwa is the island's second ancient capital — a vast, walkable ruined city of royal palaces, monastic complexes and the famous Gal Vihara rock-cut Buddhas. It is best seen by private bicycle in the cool early hours, with a chauffeur trailing behind.

1. Day 1 — Arrival & sunset on the tank. Transfer in from Sigiriya or Trincomalee, sundowners at the reservoir.
2. Day 2 — Cycle the ancient city. Private dawn cycle with a scholar guide, lunch back at the hotel, afternoon swim.
3. Day 3 — Onward. Optional Kaudulla safari, transfer to Trincomalee or back to Kandy.
