Wilpattu — "land of lakes" — is Sri Lanka's largest national park, a vast dry-zone wilderness of forest and natural water bodies in the north-west. Visitor numbers are a fraction of Yala's, which makes it the most considered choice for serious wildlife travellers, with both leopard and the elusive sloth bear.

1. Day 1 — Arrival. Transfer from Colombo or Anuradhapura, late afternoon scouting drive.
2. Day 2 — Full safari day. Dawn drive, bush breakfast, evening drive with sundowners.
3. Day 3 — Final drive. Sunrise drive, transfer onward to Anuradhapura or back to the coast.
