How we rank these
Three things we weight, in order: sense of place (does this hotel feel uniquely Sri Lankan?), service (especially for a 7+ night stay), and setting (the view from your bed, the beach, the bungalow garden). Price comes a distant fourth — at this level, the £100/night difference matters less than which morning you wake up to.
Every hotel on this list we've stayed in personally in the last 18 months, most we've stayed in multiple times. We hold preferred-partner status with Aman, Resplendent Ceylon, Anantara and the heritage townhouse group.

Common questions
What is the best luxury hotel in Sri Lanka?+
Ceylon Tea Trails in the hill country is widely considered the single best hotel in Sri Lanka — five restored planters' bungalows on a working tea estate, sole-use option, all-inclusive plan with premium wines and butler service. The benchmark.
Which Sri Lanka hotel has the best beach?+
Amanwella (Tangalle) for the most beautiful crescent of palm-fringed sand; Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle for the longest uncrowded stretch; Cape Weligama for the most dramatic cliff-top setting; ANI Sri Lanka for sole-use estate privacy.
Best hotel in Sri Lanka for honeymoons?+
Amanwella for total seclusion and Aman service; Cape Weligama for cliff-top drama; Wild Coast Tented Lodge for adventure honeymooners; ANI Sri Lanka for sole-use villa indulgence; Ceylon Tea Trails for tea-country romance with all-inclusive butler service.
Best hotel in the cultural triangle?+
Water Garden Sigiriya — Bawa-influenced architecture, private plunge pools, walking distance to Sigiriya rock. Runner-up: Heritance Kandalama for the iconic Bawa forest hotel overlooking Kandalama tank.
What about Aman in Sri Lanka?+
Aman runs two properties: Amangalla (a restored Dutch colonial in Galle Fort) and Amanwella (a contemporary beach resort at Tangalle). Both excellent; Amanwella has the more memorable setting, Amangalla the more atmospheric heritage.
Is Ceylon Tea Trails worth the price?+
For most luxury travellers, yes — it's the only true all-inclusive at this level in Sri Lanka, the bungalows are unique (you sleep where British tea planters slept in the 1890s), and the food and wine programme is the best in the country. Two-night minimum is plenty; three nights is sublime.
Can you get me preferred-rate access to these hotels?+
Yes — as a Sri Lanka specialist we hold preferred-partner status with Aman, Resplendent Ceylon (Tea Trails, Cape Weligama, Wild Coast), Anantara and the major heritage townhouses. Translates to room upgrades, late check-out, hotel credits and occasionally complimentary nights on longer stays.
