When long haul is the right call
Three conditions. You have twelve nights or more; you want weather you can rely on rather than hope for; and you want somewhere different enough to justify two days in transit. Miss any of them and a shorter trip usually serves you better.
The corollary matters too: a long-haul destination that then needs three internal flights eats the advantage. The best long-haul trips are the ones where the country is drivable once you land.

Anything with a single non-stop overnight is materially easier than a two-leg routing of the same duration.
Jet lag, realistically
Sri Lanka is GMT+5.5 — a half-day shift eastwards. Take the overnight from Heathrow, sleep on the plane, land at 10am, spend the first day somewhere gentle near the airport or on the coast, and you are effectively adjusted by day two. We deliberately build the first night at Negombo or a Colombo garden hotel rather than starting with a four-hour drive.

Cost per usable day
The useful metric on long haul is cost per day on the ground, not headline price. Sri Lanka lands at roughly £300–£480 per person per day at luxury level, inclusive of private car, chauffeur-guide, hotels and most touring — against £550–£1,000 in the Maldives and £450–£800 in the Caribbean, where transport and food are extra.

Making the flight easier
Fly non-stop where it exists. Take the overnight outbound and the daytime return. Premium economy is the highest-value upgrade on an eleven-hour sector. And build a soft landing into the first 24 hours — the itineraries that fail are the ones that put a five-hour drive on arrival day.

Common questions
What counts as a long haul holiday?+
Anything beyond about six hours from the UK — practically, the Caribbean, the Indian Ocean, South-East Asia, East Africa, the Americas and Australasia. Below six hours you are in short and mid haul, where winter weather is far less reliable.
Is long haul worth it for two weeks?+
Two weeks is the natural long-haul length: you lose two days to travel and still have twelve usable ones. Ten nights works if the destination doesn't need internal flights, which is one reason Sri Lanka punches above its distance.
Which direction is easier for jet lag?+
Eastbound is harder for most people in theory, but the 5.5-hour shift to Sri Lanka on an overnight flight is genuinely mild — you land in the morning and sleep normally that night. Westbound to the Caribbean means a bigger clock change and early waking for several days.
What are the best long haul destinations from the UK?+
By season: Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Thailand and the Caribbean from December to April; Sri Lanka's east coast, Kenya, Tanzania and Indonesia from May to September; Japan in spring and autumn; South Africa from November to March.

How long is the flight to Sri Lanka from the UK?+

Is premium economy worth it on long haul?+
On an eleven-hour overnight, it is the single upgrade that changes how the first two days feel — typically £500–£900 more per person return to Colombo. Business is £2,000–£3,500 more and worth it mainly on the return leg.
When should I book long haul?+
Six to eleven months ahead. Airline fares to Colombo are lowest around 5–8 months out, and the small luxury hotels sell their best rooms first, so the constraint is usually the hotel rather than the flight.
