Two coasts, two seasons
Sri Lanka has a year-round beach season because it has two monsoons on opposite schedules. From December to April the south and west are dry and calm — Tangalle, Talalla, Weligama, Bentota, Galle. From May to September the east takes over — Trincomalee, Nilaveli, Pasikuda, Arugam Bay.
Booking the wrong coast for the month is the single most common mistake British travellers make here, and it is entirely avoidable.
The beaches worth the flight
Tangalle — wide, quiet, the best luxury hotel cluster on the island. Talalla — a perfect crescent, genuinely swimmable, barely developed. Weligama — cliff-top hotels above a working bay. Hiriketiya — a horseshoe cove with the island's best design hotels. Dickwella — villa country. Bentota — the family choice, 90 minutes from the airport. Nilaveli and Pasikuda — flat, pale, empty east-coast sand from May.

Amanwella, Tangalle — 30 suites in a coconut grove above the sand. Anantara Peace Haven — the family-friendly counterpart nearby. Cape Weligama — cliff-edge cabanas and a crescent pool over the ocean. Kayaam House — small, quiet, adult. Anantara Kalutara — the easiest airport-adjacent beach base.
For groups, staffed villas at Dickwella, Ahangama and Tangalle sleep six to twelve with a private chef — usually better value per head than four hotel rooms.
Beach plus everything else
Yala is 90 minutes from Tangalle, so a leopard morning is a day trip rather than a relocation. Galle Fort is an hour west. Tea country is four hours north. The realistic shape is 4–5 beach nights bookended by culture and safari, and it is why Sri Lanka beats a pure-beach destination for anyone who gets restless by day three.

Practical beach notes
Currents change by month, so swim where the hotel flags it. Turtle nesting runs at Rekawa most of the year and is worth a late evening. Blue-whale charters run from Mirissa between December and April. The sand is hot by 10am — the best beach hours here are 6.30–10 and after 4.

Which Sri Lankan beaches are safe for swimming?+
Talalla, Tangalle's sheltered bays, Nilaveli, Pasikuda and Bentota's lagoon side are the reliably calm ones. Mirissa, Weligama and Hikkaduwa have currents that vary by month — the safe answer is to swim where your hotel flags it and to treat unflagged open beaches with respect.
What does a luxury beach holiday in Sri Lanka cost?+
Seven beach-only nights at luxury level runs £2,000–£3,600 per person land-only, based on two sharing. A private staffed beach villa for a family of six runs £900–£2,400 per night for the whole house. Return economy flights from London add £700–£1,100 per person.
Is Sri Lanka better than the Maldives for a beach holiday?+
Different. The Maldives has better water and better reefs; Sri Lanka has better food, more to do and costs roughly half. If the beach is the whole point, choose the Maldives. If you want a beach plus a country around it, choose Sri Lanka — or pair them.
Are there private beach villas?+
Plenty, and they are one of the island's real strengths. Fully staffed four- to six-bedroom houses with a chef, a butler and a pool run £900–£2,400 a night across Tangalle, Dickwella, Ahangama and Galle — often cheaper per head than equivalent hotel rooms.
Can I combine beach with safari and tea country?+
That is the standard shape and the reason people choose Sri Lanka. Yala is 90 minutes from Tangalle; the hill country is four hours from the south coast. A 10-night trip comfortably covers tea, leopards and five beach nights.
