The parks, ranked
1. Yala (Block 1) — the highest leopard density on earth. Busy at peak times; stay at a luxury camp adjacent to a quiet gate.
2. Wilpattu — Sri Lanka's largest park, least visited, leopards plus sloth bears. Wilder feel.
3. Udawalawe — the elephant park. Almost guaranteed herds, less leopard activity.
4. Minneriya / Kaudulla — half-day from the cultural triangle. The famous Gathering Aug–Oct.
5. Yala Block 5 (Lunugamvehera) — quieter alternative to Block 1, still strong leopard population.
6. Kumana — the eastern continuation of Yala, birds and crocodiles, very quiet.
Best safari camps
Wild Coast Tented Lodge (Resplendent Ceylon, Yala border) — pod-shaped tents on a wild beach next to the park. The most atmospheric safari stay in Sri Lanka.
Chena Huts by Uga Escapes (Yala border) — luxury cabanas with private plunge pools, excellent rangers.
Leopard Trails (Wilpattu and Yala) — premier mobile tented camp, run by veteran rangers; the wildlife-photographer choice.
Jetwing Vil Uyana (cultural triangle) — water dwellings on a wetland, easy access to Minneriya elephants.

How we run a safari
Private 4×4 jeep (no shared vehicles), Sri Lankan naturalist-ranger who has worked the parks for 10+ years, dawn entry through the quietest gate, packed breakfast in the jeep, evening drive returns at golden hour. Two nights gives three game drives — enough for a leopard sighting and most other targets.

Common questions
Which is the best safari park in Sri Lanka?+
Yala (Block 1) has the highest density of leopards anywhere in the world — more than 1 per square kilometre — and is the single best park for guaranteed sightings. Wilpattu is the largest park, less visited, with leopards, sloth bears and a more wilderness feel. Udawalawe is the elephant park — almost guaranteed sightings of herds.
Is Yala worth it, or too crowded?+
Yala Block 1 gets busy — 20–40 jeeps near a leopard sighting at peak times. The trick is to stay at Wild Coast Tented Lodge or Chena Huts (private camps adjacent to the park) and do a dawn entry through a quieter gate. With the right operator the crowds become a non-issue.
When is the best time for safari in Sri Lanka?+
February to July is dry season at Yala — animals concentrate around remaining water sources, sightings are excellent. September is the annual closure month. October to January is wetter but still rewarding, especially for leopards in Block 5 (Lunugamvehera).
How many days for safari?+
Two nights / three game drives is the standard — gives you dawn and evening drives plus a flexible day. Serious wildlife photographers do three nights for the extra rolls of the dice.
How much does a Sri Lanka safari cost?+
All-in (luxury camp, park fees, jeep, ranger, meals, transfers): £450–£650 per person per night at Wild Coast Tented Lodge or Chena Huts. Park entry fees are about £60 per person per drive.
Is a Sri Lanka safari as good as Africa?+
Different. Sri Lanka has the highest leopard density in the world — your chance of seeing a leopard is genuinely higher here than in most African parks. What it lacks is the Big Five spread (no lions, no rhino). For leopards specifically and elephants in large herds, Sri Lanka is world-class.
Can children go on safari?+
Yes — minimum age 6 at most luxury camps. The drives are 3–4 hours so age 8+ tends to enjoy it most. Wild Coast Tented Lodge and Anantara Kalutara both run family-suitable safaris with shorter drive options.
What about Minneriya for elephants?+
Minneriya hosts the famous 'Gathering' — up to 300 elephants congregate around the receding tank August–October. It's the single best wild elephant spectacle in Asia. Easy half-day from Sigiriya / cultural triangle hotels.
