The one-line answer
Choose Mauritius for a classic, low-effort beach-and-spa honeymoon at one resort. Choose Sri Lanka for variety, depth and significantly lower cost — tea, safari, Galle Fort, beach in one trip, with a private driver throughout.
Cost (UK perspective)
A 10-night luxury Sri Lanka honeymoon is £8,800–£12,000 per couple, land-only. The Mauritius equivalent at a comparable hotel level (One&Only Le Saint Géran, St Regis, Royal Palm) is £14,000–£22,000 per couple — roughly 50–80% more. Flights from London are similarly priced for both.
What each does best
Mauritius: postcard beaches, glass-clear lagoons, world-class spa, one-resort simplicity. You arrive, you don't move, you swim and eat and sleep beautifully for ten days.
Sri Lanka: Ceylon Tea Trails for the cool tea-country opening, a leopard safari at Yala, a few nights in Galle Fort, a cliffside villa at Cape Weligama or ANI for the beach finish. More moments, more stories, more variety.
Beaches, honestly
Mauritius is the better beach destination — that's the whole point of the island. Sri Lanka's south coast is excellent but wilder; long empty crescents at Tangalle, surf at Weligama, the Bay-of-Bengal openness rather than the lagoon stillness of Mauritius.
Beyond the beach
Mauritius has Le Morne, Black River Gorges, a few excellent restaurants and a tea museum — but you'll exhaust the headline activities in two or three days. Sri Lanka has weeks of substance: cultural triangle, hill country, safari, fort, beach. For honeymooners who want to do things, it's a different scale.
The combination that wins both
Many British honeymooners now book both: 7–8 nights Sri Lanka (tea, safari, fort), then 4–5 nights at a Mauritius resort for the pure-beach finish. Total: £18,000–£28,000 per couple. Air Mauritius runs the direct Colombo–Mauritius flight (~5h 30m). We package both legs in one quote.

Common questions
Is Sri Lanka or Mauritius cheaper for a honeymoon from the UK?+
Sri Lanka, by a meaningful margin. A 10-night luxury Sri Lanka honeymoon is £8,800–£12,000 per couple land-only. A 10-night Mauritius honeymoon at a comparable level (One&Only, St Regis, Royal Palm) is £14,000–£22,000 per couple.
Which has better beaches?+
Mauritius wins for classic Indian Ocean beaches — talcum-white sand, glass-clear lagoons, reef snorkelling from your villa. Sri Lanka's south coast (Tangalle, Weligama) is wilder, longer, less developed. Pick Mauritius for postcard, Sri Lanka for empty.
Which has more to do beyond the beach?+
Sri Lanka, by miles. Tea country, safari, Galle Fort, Sigiriya, blue whales, cooking classes, temple visits. Mauritius has Black River Gorges, Le Morne and some excellent restaurants — but is fundamentally a beach-and-spa destination.
Direct flights from the UK?+
Mauritius: direct Heathrow to Port Louis on British Airways and Air Mauritius (~12 hours). Sri Lanka: direct Heathrow to Colombo on SriLankan Airlines (~10h 30m). Both excellent, no transfers needed.
Better for a relaxing honeymoon?+
Mauritius. One resort, no driving, swim-up villas, spa days — that's the honeymoon shape. Sri Lanka involves more movement, which most couples love, but it's not pure resort lounging.
Better for an adventurous honeymoon?+
Sri Lanka. The cultural triangle, a safari in Yala, the train to Ella, blue whales off Mirissa — none of this exists in Mauritius. Many couples now combine: 7–8 nights Sri Lanka, then 4–5 nights Mauritius for the beach finish.
Can we combine Sri Lanka and Mauritius?+
Yes — and it's one of our most-requested combinations. Air Mauritius flies Colombo–Mauritius via Mauritius (5h 30m). Total combined cost for a 12–14 night honeymoon: £18,000–£28,000 per couple including both legs.
Which is better for honeymoon perks?+
Both excellent. Mauritius resorts have honeymoon programmes baked into the rate (sunset cruises, private dinners, spa rituals). Sri Lankan hotels deliver the same on request via us — Champagne, room upgrades, complimentary spa or dinner.
