The one-line answer
For a first long-haul Asia trip with variety — culture, tea, safari, beach in 10 nights with no internal flights — choose Sri Lanka. For island drama, big-resort wow and a fully-developed luxury market, choose Thailand.
Cost (UK perspective)
At the very top end (Aman vs Aman), the two are within 10% of each other. For mid-luxury, Sri Lanka comes in cheaper because you don't need internal flights and the chauffeur model is built in — £4,800 per person for ten nights vs £5,500–£7,000 for an equivalent Thailand trip.
Hotels
Thailand has the deeper bench — Aman, Six Senses, Soneva, Capella, Rosewood, Cheval Blanc. Sri Lanka is shallower but punches above its weight: Ceylon Tea Trails (genuinely unique — colonial planters' bungalows, all-inclusive, four-property estate), Aman's Amangalla and Amanwella, ANI's sole-use villas, Resplendent Ceylon's Cape Weligama and Wild Coast. The gap is real but the top of Sri Lanka's market is exceptional.
Variety in one trip
Sri Lanka's killer feature. In 10 nights, with one private driver and zero domestic flights, you can do the cultural triangle (Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa), the tea country (Ella, Hatton), the south coast (Galle, Tangalle) and a safari (Yala). Thailand requires you to pick a region or budget 14+ nights and 2–3 internal flights to do the same.
Beaches
Thailand's islands are more dramatic — Koh Yao Noi limestone karsts, Phang Nga Bay, Koh Lipe. Sri Lanka's south coast is quieter, longer crescents (Tangalle especially) with no jet-skis and far fewer crowds. December–March both are excellent.
Food
Thailand has the global recognition. Sri Lankan food — crab curry, hoppers, lamprais, coconut sambal — is the more surprising experience precisely because it isn't on every UK high street.
What we tell first-timers
If this is your first long-haul trip outside Europe, choose Sri Lanka — it's simpler logistically and the variety means you can't get it wrong. If you've already done a long-haul beach trip and want a second-trip step-up, Thailand's island-resort bench is hard to beat.

Common questions
Is Sri Lanka cheaper than Thailand for luxury travel?+
Roughly comparable at the very top end (Aman vs Aman), but Sri Lanka tends to win on land-cost for combined trips. A 10-night luxury Sri Lanka tour with private driver is £4,800/pp; the same shape in Thailand (Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket) runs £5,500–£7,000/pp once you factor in domestic flights.
Which has better beaches?+
Thailand's islands (Koh Yao Noi, Koh Samui, Phang Nga) edge it for sheer dramatic beauty. Sri Lanka's south coast (Tangalle, Weligama, Mirissa) wins for empty crescents and no jet-ski noise. December–March both are excellent.
Which has better food?+
Thai cuisine has wider global recognition, but Sri Lankan food — coconut sambal, jaggery, crab curry, hoppers — is having a serious moment and is woefully under-served outside the country. Many returning travellers say Sri Lankan food was the unexpected highlight.
Which is easier to travel around?+
Sri Lanka. It's roughly Ireland-sized, so every transfer is by chauffeured road or scenic train — no domestic flights. Thailand requires 2–3 internal flights for a north-to-south trip, which eats into your time and adds cost.
Which has better wildlife?+
Sri Lanka comfortably. Leopards at Yala, elephants at Minneriya, blue whales off Mirissa — all on a single island. Thailand's wildlife experience is more limited (Khao Sok, Khao Yai) and harder to combine with other regions.
Direct flights from the UK?+
Thailand: direct Heathrow to Bangkok on Thai Airways and British Airways (~11h 30m). Sri Lanka: direct Heathrow to Colombo on SriLankan Airlines (~10h 30m). Similar flight time and cost — both excellent.
Best for a first-time long-haul trip?+
Sri Lanka. One direct flight, one chauffeur-led route, three completely distinct landscapes (culture, tea, beach) in 10 nights with no internal flights. Thailand splits into separate regions that work better on a second or third visit.
Best for a honeymoon?+
Both excellent. Sri Lanka edges it on private-villa value (ANI, Cape Weligama, Tea Trails) and the cultural depth you can build in. Thailand edges it on over-water and island-resort drama (Phulay Bay, Soneva Kiri).
