Retreat, not spa

The distinction is simple. A spa sells you treatments from a menu. An Ayurveda retreat assesses you on arrival — pulse, constitution, history — and then prescribes a programme, a diet and a daily rhythm that you follow for the length of your stay. You are not choosing; you are being treated.

That is why the length matters more than the room.

How long you actually need

7 nights — a rest-and-reset programme; you will sleep better and feel lighter. 14 nights — enough for a supervised panchakarma cleanse, including the difficult middle days and a proper rebuilding phase. 21 nights — the classical length, and the one the doctors recommend when something specific is being addressed.

The retreats we book

Santani, above Kandy — a modern, architecturally serious retreat in a former tea estate, with a genuine Ayurvedic doctor and hill-country silence. Barberyn, Beruwala and Weligama — the traditional benchmark, family-run, doctor-led, unglamorous in the best way. Ayurvie and Siddhalepa — structured coastal programmes with strong clinical credentials. Ulpotha — seasonal, off-grid, no electricity, and unlike anywhere else.

What a day looks like

Yoga at sunrise, a prescribed breakfast, then the main therapy block — abhyanga oil massage, shirodhara, steam, or the specific panchakarma stage you are in. Rest through the middle of the day. A consultation, an afternoon treatment or a slow walk, meditation, an early dinner, and lights out well before ten.

No alcohol, little caffeine, and food that is warm, simple and matched to your constitution. Days three to five are typically the hardest; most people describe the shift happening in the second week.

2026 costs

Fully inclusive of consultations, daily treatments, all meals and yoga: £180–£420 per person per night. Seven nights £1,300–£2,900; fourteen nights £2,400–£5,400, land-only. Return economy flights from London £700–£1,100. Sri Lanka is materially cheaper than European wellness clinics offering a fraction of the clinical depth.

Combining a retreat with a trip

The usual shape is a week of touring first — cultural triangle, tea country, a safari — and then the retreat at the end, so you arrive calm rather than mid-itinerary. Retreats do not combine well with sightseeing days in the middle; the programme assumes you stay put.

Common questions

What is an Ayurveda retreat?+

A residential stay built around a doctor-prescribed programme rather than a spa menu. You are assessed on arrival, given a treatment plan and a diet for your constitution, and follow a daily rhythm of oil therapies, herbal medicine, yoga and rest for the length of the stay.

How long should an Ayurveda retreat be?+

Seven nights is the practical minimum to feel a change; fourteen is where a genuine panchakarma cleanse becomes possible; twenty-one is the classical length. Under five nights you are having spa treatments with Ayurvedic branding, which is fine but is not the same thing.

What is panchakarma?+

The classical five-action detoxification process — preparation with oils and heat, then specific eliminatory therapies, then a rebuilding phase with diet and herbs. It is medically supervised, physically demanding in the middle days, and needs at least two weeks to be done properly.

Where are the best Ayurveda retreats in Sri Lanka?+

Santani in the hills above Kandy for a contemporary, quiet interpretation; Barberyn at Beruwala and Weligama for the traditional doctor-led approach; Ayurvie and Siddhalepa for structured coastal programmes; and Ulpotha for a seasonal, off-grid village retreat.

How much does an Ayurveda retreat cost?+

In Sri Lanka, £180–£420 per person per night fully inclusive of consultations, daily treatments, meals and yoga. Seven nights is £1,300–£2,900 and fourteen nights £2,400–£5,400, land-only. Return economy flights from London add £700–£1,100.

Is Sri Lankan Ayurveda different from Indian?+

The tradition is shared, but Sri Lanka has its own hela wedakama lineage and its own herbal pharmacopoeia. In practice Sri Lankan retreats tend to be smaller, calmer and more comfortable than the large Keralan clinics, at similar or lower cost.

What is a typical day on retreat?+

Early yoga, a light prescribed breakfast, one to three hours of oil therapy and steam, rest, a herbal consultation, an afternoon treatment or walk, meditation, then an early dinner. Alcohol, caffeine and phones are discouraged; the rhythm is the treatment as much as the oil is.

When is the best time for an Ayurveda retreat in Sri Lanka?+

December to April for the south and west coast retreats and year-round for the hill country. Traditional practice favours the transitional periods between seasons, which in Sri Lanka means roughly March–April and October–November.
