Start with the month, not the map
Most honeymoon disappointment is a seasonal mistake rather than a destination mistake. Bali in January, the Caribbean in September and the Maldives in June are all beautiful places at the wrong time. Fix your wedding date first, then choose from what is genuinely in season.
The 2026 shortlist compared
Sri Lanka — 10–11h flight. £3,400–£6,000pp for 10 nights. Best Dec–Apr (south/west) and May–Sep (east). Most variety per pound of anywhere on this list.
Maldives — 10–11h. £5,000–£12,000pp. Best Nov–Apr. Unmatched water, nothing to do, and expensive by the third day.
Bali — 16h+ with a connection. £3,000–£5,500pp. Best May–Sep. Culture and coast, but the traffic in the south is real.
Mauritius — 12h direct. £3,500–£6,500pp. Best May–Dec. Effortless resort luxury, less to explore.
Thailand — 11–12h. £3,200–£6,000pp. Best Nov–Mar. Great islands, great food, busier.
Where Sri Lanka wins
Variety within a short driving radius, food worth planning days around, and a price point roughly half the Maldives for comparable hotel quality. A fortnight here contains a rock fortress at dawn, a colonial tea bungalow, a leopard at first light and a cliff villa above the Indian Ocean — and you never spend more than four hours in the car.
The honeymoon rooms are genuinely special: Ceylon Tea Trails bungalow suites, Cape Weligama's cliff cabanas, Amangalla's Dutch fort chambers, Amanwella's private-pool suites.
Where it does not win
If you want to fly in, lie down and not move for ten days, the Maldives does that better and you should go there — or pair the two, which is what half our honeymoon clients do. Sri Lanka's water clarity does not match an atoll, and April and October can be humid.
The twin-centre answer
Seven nights in Sri Lanka and five in the Maldives, with a 75-minute Colombo–Malé flight in between, is the best honeymoon in the Indian Ocean and costs £4,600–£7,200 per person land-only at luxury level. You get the country and the water without compromising on either.
Getting the details right
Book 6–8 months out for peak season. Ask for the specific room category rather than the hotel name. Build in two genuinely empty days. Let your planner flag the honeymoon to every property in advance — it is the difference between a fruit plate and a private dinner on the ramparts.

Common questions
What are the best luxury honeymoon destinations for 2026?+
For UK couples the strongest field is the Maldives for pure beach, Sri Lanka for variety at half the cost, Bali for culture plus coast, Mauritius for easy resort luxury, Thailand for island-hopping, and Italy or Greece for a short-haul option. The right answer depends far more on your wedding month than on the destinations themselves.
Where should we honeymoon in December or January?+
Sri Lanka's south and west coasts, the Maldives, Thailand and Mauritius are all at their best. Avoid Bali (wet season) and the Caribbean at peak pricing unless you booked a year out.
Where should we honeymoon in July or August?+
Sri Lanka's east coast, Bali, Greece, Italy and Mauritius all work. The Maldives is acceptable but squally. This is the hardest window for a classic Indian Ocean beach honeymoon, which is exactly why Sri Lanka's flipped east-coast season is useful.
How much does a luxury honeymoon cost from the UK?+
Roughly, per person for 10–14 nights land-only: Sri Lanka £3,400–£6,000, Bali £3,000–£5,500, Mauritius £3,500–£6,500, Thailand £3,200–£6,000, the Maldives £5,000–£12,000. Sri Lanka and Bali give the most experience per pound; the Maldives gives the least variety per pound.
Which destination combines beach and adventure best?+
Sri Lanka, by a distance. Within a 14-night trip you can climb a fifth-century rock fortress, ride the Kandy–Ella railway, track leopards at Yala and finish with five nights on the south coast — all within four hours' drive of each other.
How long should a luxury honeymoon be?+
Ten to fourteen nights for long-haul. Anything under seven for a 10-hour flight loses two days to travel and jet lag. Fourteen is the number where a twin-centre stops feeling rushed.
Should we tell hotels it's our honeymoon?+
Always, and let your planner do it rather than mentioning it at check-in. Booked in advance through an operator with a relationship, honeymoon recognition tends to mean upgrades, private dinners and turndown surprises; mentioned at the desk, it tends to mean a fruit plate.
When should we book?+
Six to eight months ahead for a December–February honeymoon, three to four months for shoulder season. The very best honeymoon rooms — Tea Trails bungalow suites, Cape Weligama cliff cabanas, Aman pool suites — are a handful of keys and go first.
