Why January is the best month to travel
Two things line up. The northern-hemisphere winter pushes the dry season across the Indian Ocean, the Caribbean and South-East Asia at the same time; and demand collapses the moment the festive fortnight ends. From about 6 January you are buying peak-season weather at shoulder-season prices.
The shortlist, ranked
1. Sri Lanka — 31°C, dry, and the only option on this list where two weeks buys you wildlife, culture, tea country and beach without an internal flight. 2. The Maldives — flawless water, no depth beyond it. 3. Southern Thailand — excellent, busier, further. 4. The Caribbean — dependable but the most expensive per day. 5. Oman and the Gulf — good for a short break, 25°C rather than 31°C.
January in Sri Lanka, specifically
The south-west dry season is at its peak. Coastal days sit at 30–32°C with a sea around 28°C; Nuwara Eliya drops to 10°C at night, which is the point of packing a jumper for a tropical trip. Blue whales are off Mirissa, Yala is dry enough that game viewing concentrates at waterholes, and the light is at its cleanest for photography.

Where January doesn't work
Sri Lanka's east coast — Trincomalee, Nilaveli, Arugam Bay — is in its monsoon and should be saved for May to September. The Seychelles is wet. Bali is at its wettest. If a January itinerary sends you east in Sri Lanka, it has been built around availability rather than weather.

Where is hot in January?+
Sri Lanka's south and west coasts (31°C), the Maldives (30°C), southern Thailand (32°C), the Caribbean (29°C), the Gulf (25°C) and Cape Verde (25°C). January sits in the dry season for all of them, which is why it is the most dependable month in the travel year.
Is January a good time to travel?+
It is the best long-haul month of the year for weather reliability, and the two weeks after the 6th are among the quietest and best-value of the winter. Prices drop sharply once the festive period ends while the weather stays identical.
Where should I go in January for two weeks?+
Sri Lanka is the strongest fortnight in January: ten to fourteen nights covers the cultural triangle, tea country, a leopard safari and five beach nights, all inside the dry season, with no internal flights required.

Sri Lanka's east coast and Arugam Bay are in their monsoon; the Seychelles is in its rainy season; northern Thailand is smoky by late January; and Bali is at its wettest. None of these is a washout, but January is not their month.
When should I book a January trip?+
By the previous August for full choice at the luxury end. The best small hotels in Sri Lanka and the Maldives release their January inventory early and sell it through the autumn.
Is January cheaper than December?+
Materially, from around the 6th. The same room in the same hotel in Sri Lanka can be 30–45% less than its New Year rate, with better weather odds and fewer people.
