What it means above five stars
Forget the wristband. A luxury all-inclusive plan usually covers every restaurant on the property, premium spirits and by-the-glass wine, the minibar, in-villa dining, non-motorised watersports and sometimes a daily spa treatment or an excursion. The differences between resorts are large and specific, so the plan document matters more than the label.
Where the maths works
Captive islands. In the Maldives, where the only restaurant is the resort's and a glass of wine is £18, an all-inclusive plan typically saves 20–35%. Families. Fixed cost beats constant arithmetic. Beach-only weeks. If you are not leaving the property, you may as well pre-buy it.
Where it doesn't
Sri Lanka has one of Asia's great food cultures, and an all-inclusive plan on a touring itinerary means paying twice: once for the meal you skipped at the hotel, once for the crab curry in Galle you should have had. On a moving trip, half board is almost always the better structure.
The hybrid we usually recommend
Half board with a chauffeur-guide for the touring half — cultural triangle, tea country, safari — then all inclusive for four or five beach nights at the end. You keep the restaurants where they are worth having and remove the accounting where they are not.

What to check in the plan

Not a buffet. At the luxury end it usually means all meals across the hotel's restaurants, premium spirits and wine by the glass, minibar, in-villa dining, non-motorised watersports and often one or two excursions. Some resorts include spa credit or a daily treatment.

Is all inclusive available in Sri Lanka?+
Yes, at the larger coastal resorts at Bentota, Kalutara and Pasikuda, and it works well for a beach-only week or a family trip. It makes little sense on a touring itinerary, where you are somewhere different each day.

What is not included in all inclusive?+
Typically the finest-dining restaurant, vintage wines, premium champagne, spa treatments, motorised watersports, diving, and off-property excursions. Read the drinks list — the gap between the included pour and the one you would choose is where the bill reappears.
Full board or all inclusive?+
Full board — three meals, no drinks — is usually the better buy in Sri Lanka, because it covers the meals you would eat anyway and leaves you free to drink very cheaply. All inclusive earns its premium mainly on captive islands.
Do all inclusive plans work for families?+
They are the strongest use case: children eat constantly and unpredictably, and a fixed price removes the running arithmetic. Kalutara and Bentota resorts do this well and are within 90 minutes of the airport.
Can you mix all inclusive with touring?+
That is the shape we most often recommend — half board while you tour with a chauffeur-guide, then switch to all inclusive for the final beach block. You keep the local restaurants during the touring days and lose the arithmetic during the lazy ones.
