and the one nobody costs properly.

East and southern Africa give you scale — the migration, the Big Five, horizons. They also give you £700–£1,500 per person per night at the good camps, plus light-aircraft transfers between them, and a trip that is essentially all safari.

Asia gives you a different proposition: shorter drives, lower cost, and wildlife folded into a broader trip. Sri Lanka is the strongest version — leopards at a density found nowhere else, wild elephants in the hundreds, and a beach 90 minutes from the park gate.

Yala Block 1 — the highest leopard density recorded anywhere; busy, and worth a private jeep and a dawn start. Wilpattu — bigger, wilder, emptier, better for people who want the search rather than the sighting. Udawalawe — wild elephants close to guaranteed, all year. Minneriya — the Gathering, 200–300 elephants, July to September. Gal Oya — elephants swimming between islands, seen from a boat.

Wild Coast Tented Lodge — bamboo cocoons and plunge pools at the Yala boundary. Chena Huts — 14 cabins, each with its own pool and butler. Leopard Trails and Mahoora — mobile luxury camps with private naturalists, pitched where the animals are rather than where the road is.

The part that matters most is the guiding. A private jeep with a tracker who knows individual leopards by name is the difference between a sighting and a story.

February to July is the core Sri Lankan safari window — dry weather concentrates game at the waterholes. Wilpattu extends to October. The Minneriya Gathering peaks in August and September. Yala Block 1 typically closes for part of September and October, which good planning works around rather than ignores.

This is where Sri Lanka wins outright. Yala to Tangalle is 90 minutes; tea country is four hours; Sigiriya is a half-day.
